Hi All,
Im struggling for a decent mechanic in the South London/ Surrey Area. People either seem to be either more "specialised" in the modern plug in a computer and replace what ever it tell you, or more pagoda era mercs. I've got a fair few little niggles on top of my transmission pissing oil. I've had one garage give it once over but seems to of missed a fair few things. looking for some one that knows there a way around the 90's mercs. most the mechanicals are just parts bin of a W124 and R129 SL500 so I didn't think it would be that hard to find. at the moment the only people that knew what they were looking at was Mercedes Chelsea but those labour charges are steep

any suggest would help otherwise id be looking at SLShop in warwickshire.

PCS at Horndean in Hampshire would be my recommendation - Olly (owner) frequents this forum and really knows MB's.. Many of his customers come from farther afield than you, so certainly worth the trip.

Yet another vote for PCS. Ollie is really clued up on the 124 and loves working on them so you can't go wrong really.

Ok seems pretty unanimous. Guess I will get my gearbox fixed locally first then get it booked in over there

As you're in London, I would also consider Terry at Wayne Gates, Harrow. Another fellow forum member and i'm sure he'll help with the gearbox if you're booked in with Olly at PCS.

My recommendation from experience is Star Tec in Tolworth. Hardip was a Master Tech and I believe that some of the local MB dealerships outsource work to him (not that they'd want you to know!).

I got to know him when a specialist in Richmond left a running issue undiagnosed following the replacement of the engine and gearbox mounts. It took Hardip's lateral thinking to ascertain that the issue was related to oil from the crankshaft oil seal penetrating the wiring loom and ending up in the ECU! The man really knows his stuff and his employees are pretty solid. Their repairs have never let me down.

Over the years I have used both Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow and Olly at PCS in Horndean and both are first class. I can't recommend them enough. Take your pick, you won't go wrong...

I've had my W115 and W123 mechanically restored at Holford Motor Company in Hornchurch. It's a 40 minute drive to get there from Central London but I've learnt that finding an honest and experienced mechanic is worth any inconvenience. Paul (owner) is an ex Mercedes service tech who trained on the early W123's (he's in his late 50s), so he gets the '75-'95 Mercedes cars. as he's lived through each generation. His experience is priceless, and it's really great to see him in action. Wonderful chap too!
