How did the E320 CDI compare to the CLS in terms of ride and refinement? Which was best?

Well there was a 10 year gap between the two but I remember the 3.2 litre inline 6 turbo-diesel in the E320CDi to be very smooth & surprisingly powerful. The ride was good & it was very quiet at speed. You could hear the engine when pressing on but it was a pleasant sound, even for a diesel. The current W219 CLS (was, before I had a custom exhaust made) quiet as a church mouse, even when floored you could just about hear the engine, even then it was very muted in the background. But then this is a petrol V8, the W211 was a diesel. This one has air suspension so the ride is exemplary. At motorway speeds there is no wind noise or any other noise to be honest, apart from a bit of tyre noise here & there on different surfaces. At 70 mph it's quite eerily silent in fact. When I test drove it all I could hear was the tyre noise from the 4x4 driving in front at town speeds lol. I didn't really chuck the W211 around much but I have the W219 & it handles very well considering it weighs well over 2 tons lol. As someone said above though, I get out of my 2020 Vito work van & into my CLS & the steering wheel seems huge lol, but I like that in a sort of retro classic way.

Dream Mercedes : I think the car was 1989 190 petrol but unfortunately all the ones I visited were utter rubbish.

Gave up lookng for my dream Mercedes.

2021 A220D saloon amg executive. My most favourite Mercedes & the best car I’ve had to date.

Dream Mercedes for me would be something like a brand new C63/E63, something along those lines. Only in my twenties so hopefully I’ll be in a position to own one eventually. Would definitely be some sort of lease/loan, between me and my partner we could probably afford one on a pcp or something but to be honest I’ve never fancied paying £500-600 a month for a car when my mortgage is only £260

My favourites are my current 2011 E350 CDi and a 1989 W126 300SE, which was my second Benz.

Dream Benz is a G-Wagen.

62 reg C180 executive estate in cavansite blue with factory privacy my first auto and loved it probably because it was my first
X reg slk (as a toy while I had an estate) it was ok but didn't get much use
18 reg C250d estate in polar white should have kept that one
19 reg C43 estate in black
69 reg C300 in polar white

I really like the look of those AMG GT roadsters but I've always fancied a CLA45 shooting brake and that feeling is not going away so that will probably be my next car. I just wish that there were more about to choose in pre reg form so I could get a bargain. Seem quite rare.
