Merc c class suddenly won't rev above 3000rpm

Drove back down the motorway today and when I pulled off at the junction and changed gear the car suddenly will not Rev above 2500-3000rpm. Regardless of which gear I'm in.

There has been no issues at all with the car until tonight .

I'm a little concerned to as what it might be .

It's a merc c class amg 2009 so (called sport) 1.6 petrol manual kompressor.

The car drives perfectly fine in low revs up to 80mph in 6th no problem. But if you try and accelerate ,it's stutters and I imagine would grind to a holt.
No warning lights have come on which we makes it a little more puzzling. Any help would be appreciated.

Possible air mass sensor, really needs to have the fault codes checked before anything else.
