Newbie Here! My partners C180 that was purchased about 6 months ago, 165,000 miles has always been a bit lazy in gear changes moreso when going up hill (3000-4000RPM) to get in to 3rd gear, at times even on strait roads etc. Finally got it to my private mechanic who changed the oil and also the oil pressure pipe as there was a puddle of oil under it on the cover that sits bellow the engine bay. That was changed about 3 weeks ago. Few days ago the car a started to making a whining noise when changing gears and gets louder the harder/higher the revs go up. Took it back to my mechanic who said the bearing or something has warn out and that needs replacing! I am not sure if had contributed to the problem by not changing the oil properly as it was fine before, albeit lazy through the gears but at least there was no bloody whining noise?!! Is there any way to confirm this, as it too expensive for me to fix at the moment!! :(

Suggest you ask what oil he used. Not sure what year your car is but if you have the 722.6 gearbox then you should only use MB oil or suitable alternative. Some other ATF will knacker up your box (bearings etc) in a very short time. Could also be the Valeo rad problem, glycol in the transmission oil due to rad internal oil cooler failure.

Thanks for the info guys, the man is a friend of my fathers and he has been fixing the family cars for a number of years but sometimes we get a car fixed a month or 2 down down the line something else pops up on the dash (sisters newer CLK200 2007) Has probably been to him 3 times in the last 6 months due to some electric gremlin or another which has left me reluctant to use him, but I thought an oil change would be strait forward, this subsequent issue albeit 3/4 weeks after changing the oil has left me wondering if his work has led to the bearing going in the gear box 'a diagnosis he made'. Also I dont have the special dip stick to check the level myself. Really ****** off though as it has come at a bad time but his son who works with him also said the car is okay to drive for a while untill I decide to do something about it?? Is there no quick fix or do I really need get the bearings changed or a complete gear box changed with another used one??

Hi Guys, just confirmed from my mechanic that it is down to wear of brass bushes, not bearing so my mistake.

Suggest you tell us what year and model your C180 is (W203 ?) and you may get more detailed information from other members.
