I have a Mercedes E230 (petrol) - 1988. It starts ok, and drives ok for a few seconds but then it loses power, as if there is no compression. Then it stalls, stops and cuts the engine out. It will restart but then the same thing happens.
any clues. I have had mechanics says it's simply a fuel pump problem. It's been replaced but the problem still exists.

appreciate any help.

My dad had a problem with his 1987 model 200 (W124). His car would lose power and slow to a crawl even up the slightest of inclines. On some occasions it would cut out too but it mainly lost power and the ability to go above 10mph uphill. The MB dealer put forward all sorts of theories as to the cause ranging from auto choke problems to electrical issues. Eventually an independent MB specialist (George Fraser) found out that all the car needed was a complete engine de-coke and the car was faultless after that.

Perhaps your engine needs a de-coke?

*EDIT* P.S. Welcome to the Forums :)

I had a similar problem with my 1990 230E recently. After a lot of work it turned out to be the small "u" shaped pipe which connects the inlet manifold to the throttle body had popped off causing an inlet air leak.

The pipe is underneath the inlet manifold and very hard to see. It is a push on fit, ie. no hose clips and is easily dislodged if the engine backfires.
Only takes a few minutes to check and may save you hours of grief.
Good Luck.

Sounds like either the fuel pump, fuel pump relay or OVP relay are faulty.

Check the fuel flow and pressure.
