I just wanted to write a wee thread to let everyone know how I got on with my SBC pump replacement.
Reading through endless threads on this forum and other forums I came to the conclusion that these pumps can only be replaced at either a main dealer or independent Mercedes specialist.
After lots, and I do mean lots of research I found a way around the Mercedes network.
Here's how I got mine repaired.
There are several Bosch service centres (local garages with Bosch factory backing) scattered around the UK. All SBC pumps are made by Bosch. All Bosch service centres have diagnostics and computer equipment to look into and rectify all Bosch components on any car. This includes getting around Star. Also, as it is a Bosch pump, made by Bosch and ordered through a Bosch garage there is no high Merc mark-up.
I booked my car into Hendrie Graham motor engineers in Paisley, Scotland. The owner couldn't have been more helpful. He explained how he looks after a fleet of e class funeral cars and has replaced these pumps before.
I now have my car back and feels as good as new again.
Going down the Bosch route saved me a lot of money from main dealer and Merc indy quotes and I'd recommend this route to anyone else.

I paid £755 for the pump and £235 for labour and brake fluid etc. In total, much less than the price of the pump alone from a specialist/dealer.

That is still an eye watering 990 Quid. Is that cheaper than through the dealers or MB indie?

An indie should be about the same. Add another £500 for the dealer to supply and fit.

Yes, absolutely cheaper. I was quoted £1300 for the part alone at a well known Merc specialist. And to be fair, I would say £990 supplied and fitted is a good price given the complexity of these systems.

Your Merc specialist was pulling your pants down with that quote!

I've heard under £1k with other indies. Perhaps north of the border is dearer because there is less competition?

I had my pump repaired ( i think it was refurbished) and serviced by this guy. JohnnySBC . Very nice lad and you get invoice and 6 mnonths warranty aswell ( he has a legit company) . Get in touch with him . You will be pleased with his services!

What car do you have with SBC?

E clas CLS - up to 2006 from what wikipedia is writing. SL, the Maybach and the SLR they still use this even after 2006 when E class and CLS stop using them due to high recall volume of cars

Shot yourself in the foot now haven't you...

If you had a pump repaired, you would have one of these cars and not needed to read Wikipedia.

Do you understand why people will get a strong whiff of what they smell when they are near a farm?

I did not go too deep into the sbc pump because lack of time. i let this for the people that really do this as a bussines. In life you don't need to know everything. Thats's why we have so many different jobs... I will reffer this forum to the man that repaired my pump . Beleive it or not i am not here to advertise nobody's services. just putting my experience ... he's doing the advertise himself i think as you can fiind it easy on google. Sorry if i was missunderstood...

As asked before... What car do you own that has the SBC system??

Give Acid a call at MSL Performance in Armoury Road Sparkhill. He is well versed in repairing Mercedes.
You will have to get the car to him though. You could ask if he has a recovery service if you cant get it moved easily.
