Hi guys, goes anybody know where to buy the tool used to hold the waterpump pulley still so that the fan can be removed? Or any tricks for doing this without the correct MB tool?

Before removing the fanbelt...

...attach a large spanner to the bolt that attaches the fan to the pulley, and strike with a hammer to loosen the bolt. You should be able to use hand pressure to undo the rest of the bolt. Note: on a standard RH thread, so strike counter-clockwise when looking at the front of the car.

[Assuming that you are replacing the water pump] After removing the fan and cowl (and before removing the belt), loosen the 4 allen bolts holding the pulley, then remove the drivebelt.

Rich.

MAKE ONE from steel plate.

Mercedes do make a tool to do this but dont know if they sell it over the counter. I made one from 3mm thick steel plate. Works a treat! First do some accurate measurements on the dimensions . Then make up a template in stiff card and cut the holes as required. then try it out on the pulley till you get a good fit. The tool head has to be an exact fit on the screw/bolt heads to stop it slipping off. Using a good metal blade in a jig saw and template cut out the shape in the picture. Finish the screw/bolt holes with a round file or better bore them first and then cut out the overall shape. Try to keep all plate edges sharp rt angles. Together with a 36mm Sykes Pickavant WATER PUMP spanner or similar you then have the tools to remove your waterpump fan. Remember the viscous coupling nut has a lefthand thread as indicated by the lines on the castellations!!
PS on some models you can lock the pulley to the waterpump housing at the rear with an allen key shaped bit of metal but not possible on mine.

You can probably buy a spanner in most accessory/parts shops.
