Hi,

I've got a Mercedes A150 (W169) manual and yesterday my car wasn't starting. So basically what happens is I insert the key all the lights on the dash come on and it even engages the starter motor but it just keeps turning over but it doesn't start. I have to try it about 2 to 3 time before it finally starts. The starter motor was only changed a couple of months ago and I know it's not a dead starter because I can hear it engaging and the battery seems fine too, any ideas what this could be please? I really hope it's nothing too serious!

Thanks

Hi
From what you describe sounds like a fuel pump issue to me
I would get to a trusted garage and get the fuel pressure checked
With the ignition on looking for 3.5 bar plus

Hi, if I remember back a few months didn't you have the same issue and had it booked in at Merc dealer, what did there diagnostics at the time say, if I remember you had had starter done and then replaced again, had various warning lights, electrical issues, heater issues, ect, at the time I did not think it was a starter issue.

I still think you have an electrical issue somewhere other than starter. and need it on Star MB system to get to bottom

Hi, thanks for your reply, what makes you think it's a fuel pump issue, have you had a similar problem like this before? Is it possible to check the fuel pressure yourself without the need to take it to a garage?

Thanks

I didn't take it to a Merc specialist I took it to a independent garage and they just replaced the starter motor for me, luckily the old unit i had was still under warranty from euro car parts so they exchanged my old starter for a new one free of charge. After it was replaced the car was running fine for months and only a couple of days ago it started playing up again. The weird thing this is an intermittent issue sometimes the car starts first time and other times it takes a couple of goes to get it going. I think your right getting it hooked up to star MB system but am not sure where to take it? Am in Leicester and am also worried about how much it would cost to get it checked as money's a little bit tight at the moment :(

Ok did you tell garage to replace starter motor or did you get garage to run diagnostics to determine it def was starter motor ? from what you posted before im still unsure starter was original issue.

Are you using the car every day ? or dose it sit for a while/ few days

Are you still getting random electrical issues with car, random warning lights that go away anything electrical not working or occasionally not work but then works, issues with locks keys ect

either way I still think as last time bite the bullet find a good MB specialist and pay for star diagnostic

Hi,

Sorry I should of explained a bit more clearer, I didn't get a garage to run diagnostics. What I did was do some personal tests so I first checked the battery voltage and that was ok and then I did another test to check if the starter motor was faulty, here is the video I watched:

From that I was convinced it was the starter motor so I got it replaced and the car was running fine for a couple of months. The only other thing that has happened in the last few days was one of the rear lights was blown and when i went to take it out one of the bulbs on the other side went dead too. Not sure if that's got anything to do with why it doesn't always start though.

P.S Sorry to ask this but is there not a cheaper diagnostic tool that I could potentially use other then star to figure out what's wrong with my car please?

Hi

Yes has an a class few weeks back int wouldn't start or cuts out randomly. Had to connect a pressure gauge to test unless u got a machine that will read the fuel pressure

iCarsoft makes a couple of diagnostic tools for Mercedes Cars in the £100 region. They are not as powerful as Star, but good enough for diagnosing most issues, although it is not as good as Star in clearing some of the most 'specialist' error code in the gearbox and airbag system in my experience.

I would highly recommend anyone who owns an 'older' Mercedes to invest in one as it will easily pay for itself.

There should be a test port on the fuel rail. You can use a fuel pressure gauge to see what the fuel pressure is when cranking.

port injected engines should be around 50-60psi I believe.

Yes unsure correct on the drivers side under the intake manifold slightly fiddly to get to. Ignition on pump should prime turnaround 3.5 bar and when running about the same 3.5 to 4 bar
