Mercedes Benz oil 229.5 amg spec ( c63 ) etc

Dealers used to gave their own oil supply arrangements and so providing that it meets the required specification then it could be branded pretty much anything.

MB Birmingham supplied Castrol in the very first service in our ML270 in 2004. When I've called around for pricing one dealer (Chesterfield or Derby maybe) said they used Shell (at that time).

I've supplied my own Mobil 1 oil for many years but I forgot to take it with me for the most recent service on the ML63. I asked about Petronas, and that dealer group I use still only uses Mobil 1 for AMG vehicles, but uses Petronas for everything else.

I suspect there's no right or wrong answer to this, only different!

I'm thinking if getting this for out e220 cdi, excellent price for genuine manufacturer oil

I started a thread and many replies were that in was petronas oil inside

I have options between this and mobil1 esp

Mercedes have said it is 5/40 and their own brand of oil.

Like there parts, they don't make there own oil.

Mercedes will sell whichever brand they currently have a contract with, when I worked at merc it's went from duckhams to castrol to Mobil.

This is interesting...

The E63 (m157) went for its first A service last week. They filled it with 8.5l of 0W-40 Mobil one.

But the manual says 5W-40 and that's what I've been topping up with all year. (7 litres in 10,000 miles, so virtually an oil change anyway!)

Not that there's anything in it, just wish they would be consistent.

PS I'll get some of that Petronas oil, How cheap is that when the dealers charge £15.99 per litre (plus vat)!

As others have said 5/40 is the best oil for the M156 not so sure about your M157.

Is duckhams still around? They used to be good and I loved the name and bottle colour as a child

I am sorry - I think any one who runs an AMG and has it dealer serviced should be embarrassed by showing up with their own oil.

Really? I don't see a problem with it really and it works out as a decent saving.

But this oil is bought from Mercedes (that the thread is referring too) and works out at saving you roughly 50 pounds on a service.
That to me is 3/4 of a tank of fun juice and i would certainly not be embarrassed at that.

I am sorry - I think any one who runs an AMG and has it dealer serviced should be embarrassed by paying £15 for one litre of oil when one can be far more prudent and wise and purchase five litres for £17 from a mb dealer hence showing up with their own oil and saving over £100 like I did.

Mercedes charge a premium price for oil so if you are buying it significantly cheaper for the correct stuff and the dealer is happy to use it in your AMG I see absolutely no problem at all :thumb:

+1 it's not like you carry it in to the reception area.

Just tell them its in the boot, no one knows.

I bought oil filter and fuel filter for my S211 320CDI from my local Mercedes dealer yesterday and asked if they were doing a deal on the oil 229.51 and they said yes £34.76 for 5 litres!
I explained that dealers were selling on ebay for £15.99 plus postage but they would not drop on price.
Ordered 10 litres from Mercedes Newcastle delivered for less than £40...thanks to this tread....just wanted to say thanks to the OP.:thumb:

Strange how some dealers will match/beat prices and others refuse, my local dealer beat the price by a marginal figure but a few of us from here done a group buy so that may have influenced the dealer, we spent just over £400.

Why should anybody feel embarrassed at saving money?
The dealers are used to some customers preferring to use or supply their own oil.
I don't see the problem at all. Does this mean that you believe non AMG owners can supply, but AMG should "feel embarrassed?"
