Picked up my CL500 from the loacl dealer today after MOT. While there I noticed a brochure for Mercedes-Benz SMART (Small Area Repair Technique), so I asked the sales guy how much to repair three small scratched on my paintwork and get rid of some kerb marks (previous owner, not me) on my alloy wheels.

He quoted me £75 a wheel for refurbishment and £100 a scratch. The wheel price is definitely high, I had all four wheels on my Aston Martin refurbished for £100 +VAT but I've never looked at chip and scratch repair specialists before. Has anyone used any of these? How do their prices compare?

Well that would be £375 in total? Put it this way, when I bought my car I was offered a SMART insurance which I declined.

The cost of the insurance over 3 years of ownership was £300, plus £25 per claim. So, claim 3 times and thats the same cost as your estimate. Claim any more times and I guess it starts to pay off.

I cant really say if thats expensive but I suppose if I had taken the insurance and claimed 10 times in 3 years it would be £550 in total for 10 repairs, so £350 for 4 repairs sounds steep.

Then again, I could have bought it and never needed to claim in which case the insurance is expensive.

You could try a company called chips away, I have heard they are good and reasonable.

I don't think the MB dealer will carry out SMART repairs themselves.

When I asked about it (MB Bath) they implied that someone would come in and estimate the cost of repair...

Chips Away are only as good as the actual franchise offering the work and quality may vary accordingly...
