Mercedes Car Tracking - Privacy Invasion

Good afternoon. BMW ConnectedDrive, VW's CarNet; does Mercedes-Benz have units within the vehicle which track and upload data via 3G/4G to their business?

If so, I would like this disabled. I recall a 'terms and conditions' privacy acceptance when using the 'app' application functionality, but did briefly read it all and it looked pretty standard. Would be intrigued to know what others know of this in the UK (not USA.)

Thanks, Jayla

Why? Are you a 'person of interest'?

Do you really believe people have nothing better to do than track your journeys? You might just be grateful should something untoward happen to you, breakdown or some such.

It's a bit like the IT security where I worked. Every keystroke was recorded but no one would look at the data, unless there was a specific reason and request made.

There's much more important things to worry about, just drive and forget about it..

I don't care.

The pros outweigh the cons as far as I'm concerned. I'm not robbing banks for a living.

Due to profession I am fully aware of the importance of privacy. Your post is akin to the deranged ramblings of those who state "if you are innocent, you have nothing to fear!" which can be applied to internet use, CCTV cameras so beloved of some councils and such like.

I will dignify your post with further response; self assured that whether I drive recklessly (I absolutely do not) or like a granny - neither I wish to expose to bureaucrats at whichever car manufacturer whose car I choose to purchase. Such detail as what music was playing and volume of music is also exposed to these car companies, in an effort to correlate the biased notion that a stereotype metallica lover blaring music is more likely to be less worthy of a warranty replacement than an individual enjoying Rachmaninoff.

Trust that satisfies your trite response. I am a 'free thinker' and do not make use of such services as have been detailed thus far. If it means loss of the horrifically outdated TMC traffic updates than I would happily accept that.

Oh, please pass my foil hat....

You're right it can. :dk:

Who do you think you are? Nobody is interested in you. At very most, your data might affect some statistics. Maybe if 70% of drivers use comfort mode, even in sport models, maybe make that a default in the next firmware update. etc.

I'm with jayla on this - question everything, trust nothing.

Excuse me folks but...the OP asked a simple question and on the correct forum. Why are we subjecting him to an attack on his character or beliefs?

It's not an attack on his character. I was trying to point out that nobody at any car manufacturing company is interested in him, or anyone else. There's nothing wrong with gathering data for statistics to help improve products.

I then gave my personal view, which is that I don't care if my location gets recorded, my phone does it all day long, and I could turn it off, but don't want to. Again, it's pros out weigh it's cons.

Is the OP expecting to get a ransom call from someone after the car manufacturer "loses" this data? "I know where you are". I'd answer "Yeah, so do I".

You read post #4?

I will extend my query to: what is logged and, if too much (in my own opinion) can it be entirely disabled?

My concern is not insurance company monitoring but rather the selling of my personal data - anonymised or not.

Some people don't mind spam, junk mail and profiling. I work with Big Data and, as per the Auatralian census scandal recently, you can note that your own information can be linked to you without you even being aware of this profiling by companies occurring. The aim is to part with your cash; not tin foil hat tomfoolery.

You do understand that we have to send all posts like yours to a GCHQ it is standard policy I am afraid,a pity because they will now put you on the crap list, which is of course circulated to all relevant agencies who might be interested in a person who wants to vanish from our surveillance.

I think Mercedes Me works like you fear....another incremental increase in the level of intrusion. My concern is where this slippery slope will take us.

Don't wana hijack the thread, apparently my car is fitted with a tracker as it used to be owned by the dealership, how would I use it/subscribe to it?

There are lots of ANPR cameras for you to show up on anyway...

OP may I ask...

Do you have an account with anything to do with Facebook? I.e Snapchat, Instagram, Tinder, Twitter and the like

These have more info on you than something from Mercedes!

This included android phones which are used for google map live data, the list literally goes on

If you're this afraid, go off the grid :thumb:
