Mercedes E200 2.0 Petrol 1999
Hi
I have a 1999 Petrol Manual E200, I turned the key 10 days ago and no starter, I followed forums that led to the K40 relay where we found a fuse kept blowing as soon as the ignition was turned on - We replaced the K40 but no joy - We disconnected the Fuel pump and the starter and still the fuse blows - we started disconnecting the connections in the K40 and found that when we disconnect the long thin connector that runs in a line with the bank of fuses then the fuse does not blow but we have no starter - though it is a long connector it only has two wires and both run into the same point in the connector - one is a pinky/red colour and the other is the same with a blue stripe running through it - We cannot trace what these are being fed from/are feeding - Somehow this problem cleared a few days afterwards and the car started a few times before the problem with the blown fuse reoccurred and we have not got it to turn over since

the relay type is OVP 0005400072 K40

Sounds like you have a short circuit in either the starter motor or solenoid.OVP stands for over voltage protection.

If we disconnect the starter then the fuse still blows so I don't think it is the starter but if we remove this connector then the fuse does not blow but still no starter but we know not what it feeds
Thanks

Hi Jimh

Can you tell us which fuse is blowing. I have circuit diagram for E320 of a similar year. Wiring to K40 may be similar.

Hi Jimh

The 20 amp fuse (fuse 5) supplies the fuel pump vi the fuel pump relay (k27) via the red/blue cable. The red cable goes to the ECU.

Thanks
Where is the Fuel pump relay located? -

Jimh,

Haven't been able to locate position of k27 relay so far - still looking. I assume that you disconnected fuel pump at the fuel tank . If that is the case it would indicate the fault is in the cable or relay between k40 and fuel pump.
To prove this I would run a temporary cable between pump and relay. Do not disconnect the red cable. When I find k27 will be in touch. Best of luck,
Mike

I think it is in the battery compartment in a cradle beneath the rear seat -I can see the red/blue wire going under the relay and then out into the fuses No 6 is the Fuel Pump Fuse and that is ok but the wires at the fuel pump are a different colour and don't seem to run to the fuse box so we are lost again. Trying to get an auto-electrician to have a look but they seem to want the car to come to them rather than the other way around

Turned out to be a chafed wire in the wiring harness - €100 well spent on an auto electrician

Hi Jimh,

That's really good news. As a matter of interest, which wire was it?
Mike
