Hello everyone I hope your all staying well ive reluctantly been away from the group for the last year as I moved away from the Mercedes brand and purchased a brand new VW Tiguan R-Line Tech. Unfortunately from day one I regretted it massively and missed my s212 3.5 m276 so this week I finally made the decision and sold the Tiguan. I now have no car so I’m looking to get a new one ASAP but want something that’s going to last and thats not been abused and been serviced correctly etc

I now have my heart set on a E63 AMG the car I’ve always wanted but could never afford until now but unfortunately I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to be looking out for when purchasing one as I’ve never purchased anything like a AMG before and only admired The cars from a distance

I have a cash budget to spend of around the £25k mark and would ideally love the lowest possible miles, I’ve found a few in my price range which look completely standard just as I want it as I will put my own touch on it etc and with the mileage at around the 35k mark on a 2015 plate but they don’t seem to have any Optional extras installed.

To get one with a few optional extras I have to compensate on the mileage at around 70k + and a few thousand pounds extra which I’m not really happy doing

So would anyone be able to point me in the right direction on exactly what I should be checking for when viewing these cars or have you seen anything around that might fit my criteria? Looking at 2014/2015 year models and I will be paying for a RAC advanced in-depth inspection just to be on the safe side

Any help would be very much appreciated thank you in advance 👍

Base spec on the W212 E63 isn’t that basic, but some options can make the car much nicer - which is why a well-optioned car will fetch a higher price That’s the bald fact, and there’s no avoiding it. And S212's command a premium over W212's.

I agree with @MercedesDriver, forget an RAC inspection and get an experienced Indy to check a potential purchase over for you. These cars are uncommon, and it’s unlikely that a generalist will have even examined one before, let alone know of any particular things to check.

As a general rule, these cars are pretty reliable but there is still potential for expensive repairs. Other than checking obvious wear items (brakes and tyres) there’s not much else that a non-specialist is likely to spot.

This car is the one I was a train ride away from buying in Sept 2019 but the owner (on the forum) decided to keep it.
At the time it was over £34k and today its up for sale with just the aftermarket wheels replaced by the OEM ones.
Excellent spec, , lovely light grey interior one owner and under 40k miles.

If I didn't have the one I currently own I'd be all over it.

Thank you both for the great advice I’m very grateful and will take on board what you have said about the RAC inspection it definitely makes sense to use a Indy who would have experience with one 👍 I will also be going for a saloon version this time not the s212 so I’m hoping to have more choice.

Thank you 😊 I’ll take a look now the colour is very nice and certainly different to others I’ve seen

^ As mentioned by st13phil, the E63 Biturbo really is a car that needs looking at by someone with knowledge of the car. Buying an MB warranty is silly money (£2850pa last time I looked) so getting one without faults is paramount. A warranty from an independent dealer isn't worth the paper its printed on IMO as there are so many get out clauses.

Do check the condition of the discs and pads. Fronts are up £1k and rears £300 to replace. A 2014/15 model will have the later timing chain that presents no problems. Look for smoke from the exhaust (possible worn turbo seals). If it misfires at all, I'd walk away. Possibly a poor remap and engine problems looming.
Tyres are around £700+ for a set of premium brand. Finally, check the service history. It's one car I wouldn't buy without a full and correct history. Service intervals are every 12 months or 11.5k miles? whichever is soonest, so a service once a year at least.

The desirable options I'd look for are full panoramic glass roof, 360 camera, heated/ cooled dynamic seats and rear blinds. They are well optioned anyway but those are the stand outs for me.
Fantastic cars with the ability to make you grin like a Cheshire cat. Further tuning options are huge if you want to explore the limits of the engine.

IIRC the red car I linked above has the heated/cooled dynamic seats, panoramic roof and 360 camera. Not sure on the rear blinds.
I did have the data card at one point but deleted it when I bought mine.

Roger,

I don't wish to speak out if turn but I'm wondering if you're getting your cars mixed up? My sincere and humble apologies if I'm wrong.

I made an enquiry about that red one the day the ad was posted and it's on my radar. It has bog standard seats and no camera. In fact I'm pretty certain it has no optional "toys" at all.

It does score well for the gorgeous hyacinth red paintwork and the grey leather, mind.

Yes looks like you might be correct I’ve asked the seller for the build sheet spec list and he replied with the following

It’s standard specification apart from the factory pan roof and the metallic paint and the tracker
Regards

Not sure you'll find better value than £25k for a 2015 and 35k miles. Sounds good value even for private sale.

As others have said higher spec = higher price, but they're pretty well specced anyway. I decided I valued lower mileage over optional extras, but that's basically the choice you have. I'd have liked the dynamic seats and reverse camera, but to me tech isn't that important. Great cars, sure you'll enjoy it!

Hi WEnglish, It doesn't look like I can pm you on your profile, I'm considering selling mine as I'm off to America for at least 2 months for work in a few weeks...Black on Black with Pan roof its a full AMG dealer serviced car 65 Reg ~ 32500 miles currently.

I still have 8 months of a full MERC warranty (can indeed confirm £2850) and can give you more of a run down if interested.

Else I have to sort my garage to get it in and SORN it!

Would want a little more than you have but worth a chat at least.

Regards

Paul

The panoramic roof was standard on 2015 E63's anyway.

Certain "toys" can always be retro-fitted if wanted, such as a reversing camera (360 too expensive for me!) and LSD.

I did look at retro- fitting reverse camera, but seem to remember it being pretty expensive?

I've retrofitted a Quaife diff which was well worth the money.

IIRC the gents at Comand quote £500 for an OEM kit for a W212 saloon. I believe a 360 camera kit can be fitted but is extremely expensive for what you get over the single reversing camera.

Pano roof is standard on all S212 E63's. It was made standard on the W212 E63 in either 2011 or 2012.

By 2015 metallic paint was also standard, but Diamond White and Hyacinth Red were both cost options (£480).

Not out of turn at all David.
My memory is letting me down and I'm wondering if in fact it is the same car I was about to buy.
I have a feeling its not, as I'm sure the one I was about to buy was an E63S. Never saw the reg but had the Vin# at the time which made me sure it had those extras I mentioned.

Not to worry, that is still a decent buy despite not many extra options.
