Mercedes E63 Buying advice required newbie to AMG

I'm also considering switching into a E63 so there could be a race on here:cool: Have had my eye on prices since xmas and a good E63s seems to be c.3-5k more than E63 of same year/mileage/spec. One appeared on AT earlier this week but ceramic discs put me off as i hear they are very costly to replace?

Keen to try and secure one with Driver Package / Dynamic Seats and HK. I liked the Hyacinth Red that appeared several weeks back but wasn't optioned particularly well. Have been advised to steer clear of the magno grey for reasons already mentioned above.

Main problem though is me. I keep swaying from E63 to M5 / M6 (Gran Coupe), slightly controversial on here i know! Thing is I've now had several AMG's and have always fancied a M series. M6 are silly money, 30-35k for a decent 2015/16 plate. Have also given some serious thought over an E39 M5, can perhaps see those going same way as the E30 M3's. (but finding good example is getting harder and harder)

That all said, what keeps bringing me back to the E63 is my reliable local MB indie. Can't really put a price on that. (and the local BMW indie charges similar rates to main dealer, work that one out!)

Oh, i also need to get mine sold so fingers crossed these damn restrictions are lifted soon:wallbash:

The carbon ceramic discs are a horrific price to replace. Not needed unless you are up to high speeds on the Autobahns or taking it to the track. Standard 2 piece discs are perfectly fine at £600 -£800 for a front set.

These set of ceramic discs aren't even new and look at the price!

The discs will last the life of the car, i doubt you will ever need to replace them.

Hi guys quick question on a March 2014 e63 do I need to worry about the timing chain issues that I’ve be reading about on 2013 and under or should I be ok on this year of car ? Its a real issue not being able to view cars and test drive etc especially with strict lockdown rules in wales etc most garages want to deliver the cars to your home so I need to ask as many questions as possible even If it dose annoy the seller £27k plus is a lot of money to trust someones views when you have never even met

I have found a lovely e63 the only issue I’ve found with it might be with the service history it’s currently on 33k miles so really nice and low and has had 6 services. 4 x with MB direct and the 2 x most recent from a vag specialist as the previous owner was friends with the owner of the VAG garage and trusted him more than a MB specialist apparently.

So Would the car being serviced at a VAG specialist be a issue for anyone else or am I being over picky ? He also stated the VAG services were updated onto the Mercedes service portal when I asked yet I very much doubt that’s correct. I’ve checked online with Mercedes to price up the next service and it’s showing the last recorded mileage with Mercedes was at 25k yet the garage said it was last serviced a 1k ago so with it being on 33k now it wouldn’t add up if that makes sense

Hopefully I’m being over picky as it’s a lovely car on low miles

The official Xentry document infers that M157 engine numbers after 157 9xx 60 022333 (December 2012) do not need modification. I believe a general rule of thumb is that mid to late 2013 engines onwards should be fine so a March 2014 build should be ok. If you can get the VIN, run it through a decoder to get the engine number and confirm.

Thank you I’ll try and get the VIN from the dealer

The timing chain on a March 2014 E63 will be a revised one and should cause no worries.

The service record needs looking into although probably complete. If the VAG services aren't showing on the MB portal I would want to see invoices stating the work that was carried out.
A 2014 car should have had the spark plugs and ATF changed in 2020. Mine is a Sept 2014 car and this was done last year at the main dealers as part of the scheduled service items.
If neither were done I'd be looking for at least a £500 reduction in price to deal with those two items.

Thank you for the great advice he said he will look into the history with Mercedes about the ATF and get back to me so I will know tomorrow Hopefully and I will then also mention the spark plugs to him.

I’ve actually found another this evening again a 2014 with only 34K miles slightly more price wise but a
this is a night edition with a full 8 Mercedes dealership services. They have just sent all the information to me of the services carried out by mercedes showing just like you stated spark plugs and ATF have all been completed so I’m happy with that

My only issues with this new one is the previous MOT history looking back to April 2019 at 29,258k with the following advisories

information
  • Front Wheel bearing has slight play (5.1.3 (a) (i))
  • Front Road wheel slightly distorted (5.2.2 (c) (i))
  • Front both front axle level sensors seized
The following mot was then 6 months late taken in October 2020 passed without issues on 34,056k and only advisories on the brake pads all round with no mention of the previous advisories but the seller has stated the pads have just this week been changed at £530 with genuine Mercedes pads

Fingers crossed the previously entered advisories from April 2019 were all fixed with paperwork to back it up if not I’ll probably walk away

Than you again

MOTs were extended 6 months in 2020 due to covid, so no concern there.

Sounds low miles for issues with a bearing but not unheard of. I think I've heard these alloys can damage quite earlier from potholes.....

I completely forgot about the Covid extension thank you 😊

I will ask the questions tomorrow see what they say thanks again 👍

This car is the one I was a train ride away from buying in Sept 2019 but the owner (on the forum) decided to keep it.
At the time it was over £34k and today its up for sale with just the aftermarket wheels replaced by the OEM ones.
Excellent spec, , lovely light grey interior one owner and under 40k miles.

If I didn't have the one I currently own I'd be all over it.

That’s lovely

Hello everyone I hope your all staying well ive reluctantly been away from the group for the last year as I moved away from the Mercedes brand and purchased a brand new VW Tiguan R-Line Tech. Unfortunately from day one I regretted it massively and missed my s212 3.5 m276 so this week I finally made the decision and sold the Tiguan. I now have no car so I’m looking to get a new one ASAP but want something that’s going to last and thats not been abused and been serviced correctly etc

I now have my heart set on a E63 AMG the car I’ve always wanted but could never afford until now but unfortunately I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to be looking out for when purchasing one as I’ve never purchased anything like a AMG before and only admired The cars from a distance

I have a cash budget to spend of around the £25k mark and would ideally love the lowest possible miles, I’ve found a few in my price range which look completely standard just as I want it as I will put my own touch on it etc and with the mileage at around the 35k mark on a 2015 plate but they don’t seem to have any Optional extras installed.

To get one with a few optional extras I have to compensate on the mileage at around 70k + and a few thousand pounds extra which I’m not really happy doing

So would anyone be able to point me in the right direction on exactly what I should be checking for when viewing these cars or have you seen anything around that might fit my criteria? Looking at 2014/2015 year models and I will be paying for a RAC advanced in-depth inspection just to be on the safe side

Any help would be very much appreciated thank you in advance 👍
Make sure you get limited slip differential

Less important, but brake fluid should have been changed in 2020 on a 14 car as well.
Just checked the service history it’s been actually changed 3 times in total 2016 2018 2020 thank you for the heads up 😊

Hi Wenglish,

Iv been told that your car maybe for sale but this forum wont let me message you????
