What is it about Mercedes heaters that work so well and does yours work well too?

Of all the vehicles I have driven both newish and oldish my 26 year old W124 warms up so quickly and just seems to fill the cabin efficiently, even in this freezing weather we are starting to have, half a mile and its warm. Brilliant.

Well the newer ones leave a little to be desired ,my S320 takes about 2or3 miles to warm up,in the winter, you would think that with all the electronic extras that are built in a auto rad blind might have entered their minds, but I suppose it would just be another thing to go wrong.

I can confirm that my thermostat works, the car has never overheated and it sits less than half way when fully up to temperature.

I wonder if with the newer design of engine blocks the water has much further to travel than the older ones? I think petrol engines tend warm up quicker as well, I used to have a 300Tdi Discovery and that took AGES to warm up

My 2010 C220 takes 15-20 miles to get to 90° or so in these temperatures at the moment.
Thankfully get heat out almost straight away thanks to the electric heater

As above i have always found diesels to take about 50% longer to warm up then petrol engines, my R129 300SL seems to be at normal temp after a mile or so:D

Just changed the thermostat in my Volvo V70 D5, it was knackered as i noted it took too long to get to op temp, but waited till summer was over, it now warms up about 50% quicker then before, still takes about 3miles....note Volvo heaters and AC are also excellent.

My 2009 E320 starts to blow warm air after 2-3 miles, way faster then any other car I've had with the exception of a 190D (W201) I had about 25 years ago, that from memory was even quicker to blow warm air.

Heated seats are a joy. :-)

My W204 heating is firing on all cylinders within a few minutes, nice and toasty!

My daily is an old Xsara Picasso HDI, again this takes ages to warm up and even when warm it doesn't fill up the cabin and maintain the temperature as well as the old W124

Yes , got into my R129 tonight , Baltic outside , yet by the roundabout
300 yds down the road , hot air was gushing out ( of the heater vents ) and half a mile down the road all was toasty .

Pretty much all my cars , apart from the two diesels , have been like this , and even they would warm up eventually .

Big old inefficient petrol engines are great at converting fuel into heat. Our 124 warms up much more quickly than the more modern ones in the fleet

SAAB heaters make you feel like you're sitting in a furnace - there's a reason for that :thumb:

My E320 CDI (W211) takes quite a while to warm up but then it's big engine and a diesel so I half expect that.

Was surprised how quickly my CLS63's engine gets up to temperature and my Mrs SL350 warms up quickly.

My Petrol C180 W204 takes about a mile or so to reach inside temp of 26C (this is what I am setting in the morning) and about 5-7 minutes to reach 90C (Engine).
