I have Mercedes Insurance, run indirectly by Norwich Union, which when I took it out some years ago was I thought a good deal.
The deal was that if you were involved in a prang and it was not your fault then during repairs they lent you an Equivalent Mercedes to your own. If it was your fault then they lent you a C Class. The rates were comparable so all was well.
Fortunately or otherwise I never tested the system until now when I am going through the damage due to "Tile off Neighbours Roof" fiasco. Which incidently my insurance is having difficulty getting anyone to pay for and it is going to cost me £250 excess.
Anyway back to problem.
I now find out that the previously agreed hire of Mercedes during repairs has been "Withdrawn". and that the usual bog standard A type Ford KA is on offer for the week that they want my car.
As I am taking delivery of a new car in March and my Insurance is renewable in April can anyone recommend a better insurance that lends you a "Decent Car" during repairs caused by some other Idiot. at reasonable rates and not large excesses.

Hopeful ?

Kind of easy...

If your with NU then some MB garages are approved body shops, you won't need a second quote and your guaranteed a Mercedes loaner.

Unfortunately my local dealer sends all his body repairs to a seperate repairer approved by Mercedes and Jaguar and who are very good, but only have A Classes on loan. Which is better than nothing.
However they are not on NU list. The nearest which are approved, is the one I am being sent to which only have KA's.

Why not say you need an automatic? I don't think they do automatic Ka's

take your car to Mercedes-Benz Brentford (near chiswick roundabout) speak to the bodyshop manager - Daniel palmer, say Mr. Dhir sent you - he will sort this all out on your behalf

you'd be gutted if they *did* find an automatic Ka though...

Dunno about best as I have yet to make any claims (never claimed in over 15 years ) but I couldn't beat Tesco's price anywhere.

My wife however got a shockingly good price at www.quotelinedirect.co.uk - long winded form but worth it.

If the damage was not your fault, ie the tile blew off onto your car, you could hire an equivlent car, and sue your neighbor for your uninsured loss (the costs involved in putting right the damage to your property)

Your neighbors household insurance would probibly not cover the damage to there roof, as it was probibly a maintanance issue, but will usually pay out for public liability.

Might not aid neighbor relations tho , and would leave you out of pocket until the claim settled. See a solicitor if you are interested.

My insurance is through Tesco.com, cheapest I could find. The cover is provided by a division of Direct Line and is fairly good, apart from the provision of a loan car I think.

Apart from shopping for the cheapest quote for the cover (Fully Comp, Protected No claims etc) I alswyas check to see if repair work will be authorised at an MB dealer.

This (last) years premium, i think I paid about £150 extra (total cost about £1500 I think), over the cheapest quote I got for this peace of mind.

Whenever I asked insurers though, they said loan cars were not part of the policy but, down to whatever the reapiring garage could offer as a courtesty car. A bit crap really.

But i think that's what the £18ish charge for "Uninsured Loss Cover" is. If you have to pay for a hire car, you can claim back the bill - how long this takes I have no idea and hope I never have to find out.

Uninsured loss will usually only apply if it is not your fault, and your insurance company can pin it on someone else. Hence the term "un-insured", as if it covered you it would be "insured" loss.

You can do this yourself by simply caling a solicitor, who's costs will be added to the claim for un-insured loss.

Also you have the right to take your car to a main dealer for repair, regardless of if they are approved or not. It they are not approved by the insurance company, then the insurance company will not offer any warantee on the work, if you use there approved garage there is usually a three year warantee. You may be required to get two quotes etc.. an the terms of your polocy regarding replacement cars etc. will still apply.

Thanks for advise fellers.
My neighbour is actually being very nice about it all and I am sure will want to see me right if Insurance doesn't eventually cough up.
I agree that the essential is to have the vehicle repaired at an Dealer approved garage.
I used to have Uninsured Cover on a previous policy, but as you say it only works if you can find someone to sue.

Like Brian, my brother used to have MB insurance, but found out afterwards that all they are is brokers. MBUK have nothing to do with the insurance what so ever, except pick up a commision on all policys they sell.

When he had to have his car repaired (now my car) it had to go back twice and his courtesy car was a Dihatsu city car. It really was smaller than a Ka, and he could actually touch the rear screen from the front seat!!

The Garage doing the repair was not a MB body shop but one acceptable to MB.

When he complained to MBUK they just stated that they act as brokers and any complaints must be directed to the actual insurance company.

Needless to say they never got our money again.

As for insurance company I'm with

www.elephant.co.uk

My premium is £370 with protected N/C's and it's parked on the road and classed as a imported car.

i would try www.eaglestar.co.uk (insurance from zurich bank)-good cover, guaranteed courtesy car.-good website for a quick quote.-reasonable price as well.

i would also try out www. esure.co.uk-again good wesite, reasonably priced insurance which you can tailor to your own needs-ie increase the excess, reduce it etc. if you are a safe driver, then the premiums are very reasonable.
