Mercedes Me adapter now Free

Well Mark44, I cannot disagree with a word you have said.

I activated the similar feature on my BMW this week, it is streets ahead of the MB version.

In fact the whole connected function is miles better, I have nearly 3 years worth of free Deezer through the SIM in the car which I particularly like as it works on the Continent as well.

Filled in the form online and had a call back from Ascot MB. Going to have this fitted to my W204 and see how it goes...

It's been free for a year or a bit longer, I read about it on SLK forum. I got mine last June and set it up myself, you don't need help from dealership. In SLK 2014 it was only useful for recording re-fuelling, nothing else useful for me. I stopped using it after some time and deleted my Mercedes Me account. It's in the drawer now in nice black box.

It is useful for manufacturer, because they can harvest data from cars, they couldn't before. So more info for free.

Even before harvesting data from your car, you need a Mercedes Me account with the car registered to it, which means they already have your personal details even before the Mercedes Me Adapter is plugged in to the OBDII port.

Personally, I don't mind, they can harvest me and my car to their heart's content.... but I can see how this might not be to everyone's liking.

Now setting aside the Mercedes Me Adapter... this is where things are heading. Unless you make a point of only driving old cars from the pre-'connected car' era, in the near future you won't be able to get the most out of your new wheels without consenting to giving away some of your privacy.

I'm fully aware of that problem with new cars. So keeping to previous, outgoing or a bit basic ones.

No need for Mercedes me account if not using adapter or Live Traffic.

Remote locking/unlocking
Remote Parking Assis
Vehicle Setup (alarms and notifications)
GPS Geofencing
Accident Managemnet
Concierge Service
In-Car Office

I believe all these require registration with Mercedes Me, though I can't really verify this, because none of these services are available for my 2013 car....

Anyway, perhaps Tesla owners can comment on the need to register your car with the car manufacturer?

“The only catch is that it remains "on" on your phone unless you tell the app to hibenate”

iOS will app nap any app that tries that. It can try to use background app refresh if the user has that enabled though.

I limit myself to 2014/15 Mercedes cars without the above features. My 2017 Audi is also old technology. I know I will get stuck in time warp at some point. Luckily there are also some basic cars around without all these gadgets.

The only reason I won't bother getting one fitted are the reviews saying the app drains the mobile phone battery excessively.
Having a pretty oldish phone now, I can do without the app.

turn off background app refresh and don’t allow notifications

Just put in my details and it says ‘we will be in contact soon’

Why do we need to book in fitting anyway? Isn’t it just plugging in that unit into the OBD?!!

dealer needs to set your car up in the MB servers

I ordered mine online and paid for it (well before the free offer), fitted it myself, registered the car on the Mercedes Me website, then had it activated by the Mercedes Me helpline over the phone. So from the technical aspect, a visit to the dealee is not required.

I am assuming that the reason that with the free offer they insist on a mandatory visit to the dealer, is either marketing (so that the dealer can sell you services), or admin (they don't want people just ordering these in the dozens for free), or both.

I was told that it's because the dealer has to claim the cost so they have to be booked in so that the appropriate paperwork is raised for the job and subsequent claim for payment from Mercedes

I had one fitted about a month ago but I've given up using it now. I got fed up with having a dialog come up on my iPhone every time I got in the car asking me if I want to allow the adaptor to connect. Mercedes tell me that, unlike every other Bluetooth device, there's no way of getting it to remember.

That's not my experience...

On both my Samsung Galaxy 8 and 9+ phones the Bluetooth pairing is seamless and the phone connects to the Mercedes Me Adapter (and to COMAND) automatically as soon as I enter the car.

I did not try this on am iPhone but I am assuming it's the same.

Are you sure there isn't some sort of security settings on your phone that stops it from connecting automatically to Bluetooth devices?

Having just ploughed through those 58 posts, I don’t think I’ll bother. I’m not sure it provides me with anything that’s of use. A nice toy perhaps, and always good to get something free, but I think I’ll survive without it.

I fancied one of these, but when told next available fitting date September I didn't bother.
