I’ve got a 2014 C-Class with Comand 4.5 and have the Mercedes ODBII adaptor for the App. I also have the Mercedes Me app which isn’t connected to the ODBII dongle and both will work independent of each other.

The non-dongle App is great for maps and sending destinations to the car which are picked up in the Comand interface without any issue. It’s about the only useful thing on the Mercedes Me app, not even an image of the car shows in it, just a generic car shape covered in blanket (something to do with configurator not being called correctly by the app in the background probably) but it does connect to my calendar and I can send destinations direct to the car.

The dongle app which seems more feature rich with tracking of journeys and other data only seems to have navigation options for petrol stations or car parks. I can search for destinations but it won’t let me send them to the car, it appears to only let me navigate to fuel and parking locations. Am I missing something or is this normal?

I’ve had connected BMWs and Audis and to be honest, they are all pretty rubbish at what they do - all seem to be geared around marketing and selling rather than useful functions. I hoped the Mercedes one would be better.

The Mercedes me Adapter is a retrofit for older cars that have an OBDII port (which goes back to the late nineties).

The reason you can send destinations to the car from the newer Mercedes me app is that your 2014 W204 has COMAND Online 4.5 Gen3 (aka NTG4.7), and also the KOM Module with the built-in Vodafone 3g connection, used for receiving the TomTom Live Traffic data, which is a subscription-based service.

COMAND Online NTG4.5 was first introduced in 2010, while the KOM module was first introduced in mid-2013.

And, as of 2014-2015 MB started fitting the Vodafone 3g connection as standard to all their cars, which supports the newer Mercedes me app, thus making the Mercedes me Adapter redundant (though it can technically still be fitted to the ODBII port).

So the ability to send destinations to the car from the Mercedes me Adapter app - had it been included - would have applied only to cars made during a relatively narrow time period, as older cars wouldn't have been able to use it anyway. I am guessing that that's why MB didn't bother adding this feature to the older app.

BTW, you can also send destinations to the car from Here We Go (previously Nokia), but only from a web browser on a PC (and not from a mobile phone).

To clarify, cars with COMAND Online but no KOM Module (Vodafone 3g connection) can receive destinations sent to it over-the-air, but only once the driver is physically in the car and the Internet connection has been established via Bluetooth tethering to the driver's mobile phone. At current the only way to send a destinations of this type is by using the Here We Go maps via an Internet browser on a PC (and not from any app).

Cars equipped with the KOM Module (Vodafone 3g connection), typically from mid-2013 onwards, can also receive destinations over-the-air via their 3g connection. In this case, destinations can be sent from the Mercedes me app.

Best place for the Mercedes Me adapter is in a drawer with the other things that don’t work.

Mine has actually been working fine since I got it in 2017. It is permanently fitted inside the dash using and OBDII cable splitter.

It records all my journeys and refuelling, which I find useful. Also, I use the Cockpit feature which provides (among other thinks) the charging voltage and the engine oil temp.

That said, obviously if it gives you grief, then it's not worth it..

Thanks for the replies all. It’s fitted to the car and works fine, as @markjay says, it records the journeys which is handy for work and the MercedesMe app (not connected to the adaptor) has the send to car function so I can do what I need, just with two Apps which seems a bit of a fail.
