Mercedes Benz ML 270 CDI Auto 2002
Hi
I have a Mercedes ML270 cdi Auto 2002 model, It recently developed some transmission issues:-
1. it jumps out of gear and the revs go very high, when I hit a bump or even a slight pot hole
2. the gear (numbers) selector numbers on my dash disappear (so there is no gears showing), and it is now in high revs (it is as though i am driving about in the 2nd gear !)
So I went to the local mechanic, who informed me that the transmission oil and filter needs changing, he ordered the kit which consisted of: transmission oil, filter and a new plug connector for the transmission box.
after the work was completed, i took my car home and everything seemed fine until the next day....when the same issues happened again !
I returned to the mechanic, who plugged a code reader/scanner etc, and he cleared all the codes and said it should be sorted now.......an hour later same thing again !
The mechanic re-plugged the scanner again and said that it is showing that my cars front nearside ABS speed sensor is giving a fault, and when i have this replaced it then should be fine ???
I would like to give you my assessment..... when i start the car (from cold or when it has been parked for an hour or more) the gear transmission works fine and the revs are in their acceptable range too, but as i drive the car for about 2 miles or there about.....firstly the revs start shooting UP, and then I loose the gear selection mode as before!
It is as if when the transmission oil reaches a certain hot temperature then everything starts to go haywire and stays that way until my transmission oil or the engine cools down considerably before returning to normal driving ( but again this will only stay ok for about a couple of miles)
PS. Engine water temperature gauge on the dash is also stuck on zero all the time
any advise or comment from members would be very helpful
Thanks

Sounds like what you are experiencing is limp mode. That is the car goes into this "safe mode" when there is a fault to prevent damage. The car wont go above a certain gear or certain speed and hence your revs appear high. Maybe go to a mercedes specialist as they will need to plug in star diagnostics to see what the fault is not a regular obd scanner. If your temperature gauge is at 0 then it could be a bad thermostat also you might need to sort out your abs sensor. All of the systems are connected so if the ecu detects a fault in any system it may put the car in limp mode. Also dont drive it a lot until you sort the issue out or you will clog your DPF as it will not regenerate if there is a fault and you are in limp mode. Limp mode is meant so that you can take your car to the workshop. Let us know how it goes.
