It would appear that in order to meet the forthcoming 2008 U.S. emissions regs Mercedes are resorting to a Urea injection system for their diesels. Yes really ,and it seems to work. I can see the advertising copy now. Mercedes Diesel-Sheer Luxury with that faint smell of P-ss ;) ;) http://www.emercedesbenz.com/Sep06/...ll_50_States_Starting_Calendar_Year_2008.html

The urea-injection system was first announced on that fish-inspired prototype IIRC :)

Concept is not new and is already in use in the UK & Europe but on some heavy diesel units to meet EU4 standards. All truck makers will be using it to meet EU5.

Now what the MB press releases are slightly shy on is the topic of Adblue, which is the stuff that does the trick. Mentions that the tank will be replenished at oil change but how big is the tank? Something else to top up I think which the US market might find hard to come to terms with

Some reckon this stuff gets used at about 3-5% of the diesel consumption rate but it depends on the amount of Nitrogen Oxides the engine is kicking out at the time (only pumps AdBue over a certain level) and the exhaust gas temperature: will not work if gas temp. flowing into the Cat is too low.

So if 12,000 miles = say 350 gallons of diesel, is there a 10 gallon plus AdBlue tank?

And how much does it cost?

This is the same stuff as used on Peugeots with particulate traps. The dealer tops up the tank but you can buy the additive, I think the cost is something like £25 a gallon.

When I saw the words "urinal on wheels" for some reason this came into my head

The worst back design I've ever seen.

It's hard to believe that a designer with Aston Martin and the RCA on his CV
could design such a thing and that Merecedes supply the running gear !
