Just would like to ask. If any of you members ordered a power steering filter, would you expect to see Mercedes stamp on your item ,although it came in a Merceds box ,with the right number on it .But inside you find a MANN filter and made in Spain. Also no seal for pump top. And i asked if it was genuine i was told it was original filter. Any ideas. This is the second item i have had from Mercedes ,with some other item in side the box , and not genuine Mercedes parts. They had been made by someone else.

If you bought it from a main dealer then it will be a genuine part, MB don,t (generally) make the parts, they will have contracted various manufacturers to make parts to their design and standard, filters will be from people like Hengst, Mann etc, lighting will from Bosch Hella, Valeo etc, brakes from ATE, Padgid, Lockheed, Brembo etc.

right

So stwat and andy it looks like buying up market items cheaper, and from others .And not Mercedes. I have never had other parts ,only Mercedes. But starting to think twice about it now. Thank you.

Many Mercedes parts are identical to aftermarket parts from the same manufacturer. They may have a Mercedes logo and part number screen printed on them at point of manufacture but that's it. With older models they possibly don't even bother to do this as volume doesn't warrant it. If it came in Mercedes box with the hologram closure label it will be fine. If you had bought it as a Mann Filter from a motor factor it might have been slightly cheaper but on routine parts like filters there's usually not much in it. There was a point when I used to buy Knecht branded canister oil filters for my 190 from a factor as they were made in Germany. The Mercedes branded ones- complete with Merc logo etc , also made by Knecht, were made in a factory in Poland and were noticeably of cheaper construction. I'm sure both were up to the task.

That's what we all do for most parts mate, find out who the OEM of the Mercedes parts is then buy straight from them,as mentioned earlier I buy my MANN oil filters and fuel filters from EUROCARPARTS as they are the OEM supplier and cheaper too with forum discount and things like pads and disks I buy PAGID from Eurocarparts which is also OEM for Merc

Pagid are not oem for 211 pads. Not being a pest just saying!

Most people insist on genuine Mercedes parts re: servicing, what they don't realise is (just like clothes etc) you are paying for a label/packaging.

There are those who claim that the mercedes part over the dealer counter is superior to similar item as made by the same manufacturer... for example they'll claim the bosch wiper blades you buy in a factor aren't made to the same standard as the wiper blades bosch supply as original parts to mercedes.

I don't have first hand experience of this and typically will buy the part from a manufacturer I've heard of like the bosch, febi, lemforder, beru etc. if the MB part is priced poorly. The advice of a good indy comes in handy here sometimes.

I've just had a service done by the garage I use who uses "correct" parts that don't necessarily have an MB logo on them. He buys the part that fits and he knows.

I had two new head lamp bulbs fitted and these cost £85 each. Probably not a great deal different from getting them fitted at a MB dealership.

However the service was probably half the price and far better!

Wow that seems like a lot of money for xenon bulbs. Aren't they usually £40-50?

Off eBay probably yes, xenon bulbs tend to be around £80-£100 mark.

I have a new steering reservoir filter from Mercedes in my hands now.

It is in a Mercedes box and was purchased a few years ago, but not yet fitted.

Exactly like yours I guess; Mann made in Spain and nil Merc star.

Interestingly the box does not have the hologram label.

However on the spark plugs I get from Merc, they do have the Merc Star on the porcelain part and made by Beru.

From Inchcape site --- makes you wonder ---has there been a change in packaging policy ??

How to Identify Genuine Parts?

Packaging used for Mercedes-Benz Genuine Parts not only ensures the safe transport of these parts but also act as a foil against counterfeiters. The packaging distinguishes through a special design and uniform labeling.
In the case of prime line items, a specially developed hologram is used to seal the packaging. Prime line items are safety relevant parts, such as oil filters, brake pads or air filters, as well as parts which have to be replaced regularly.
When the packaging is opened, the hologram is destroyed and cannot be re-used. If buying Mercedes-Benz Genuine Parts, featuring the hologram – always insist that the hologram is undamaged!
Mercedes-Benz Genuine Parts are also marked with the protected Mercedes-Benz trademarks, as well as, if space is available, with the part number.
