No you are not seeing things! Evidently Mercedes were on the point of marketing a rebadged Nissan Titan and Frontier Pickups as a Mercedes in the US where they are extremely popular vehicles. Most of the exterior characteristics would have been held in common except for a different front fascia and badges. The real difference would have been on the inside where Mercedes would choose cabin styling and materials to better suit its buyers.
Problems rose when Daimler wanted the vehicles to be engineered to accommodate a wider range of engines than Nissan had planned.

It's always amazed me that Mercedes never brought out a 4x4 pick-up in the L200/Hi-Lux etc mould.

Is a utility pickup the image that Mercedes want to project?

They may want 4x4, but not as utility versions.

Well they make utility vans and trucks and taxis and things.

The Taxis are good durability advertising, everyone knows about Mercedes being used as taxis.

Vans and lorries are seen as upmarket, durable commercials.

They already have 4x4 in the portfolio, but not in the vein of working pickups, but upmarket luxury cars.
I would think a pickup would dilute the image.

In the Mercedes Pick-up Truck line I've always fancied these.

They only recently worked it out that people want multi-purpose vans and are doing a roaring trade in them now...

I would definitely consider a high spec Mercedes pick-up with a V6 CDI engine.

The 2 best selling vehicles in the USA as of June 2013

1. Ford F-150

The F-Series pickups maintained their enormous momentum in June, nearly matching the staggering number of units that the company moved in May. Year-to-date, Ford has sold 367,486 units, a staggering 124,900 units more than the second place Silverado.

2. Chevrolet Silverado

Once again, the Silverado has claimed the number two spot. More impressive is the fact that Chevy has yet to release the 2014 Silverado, which implies that the Silverado's best sales days are yet to come. The company recently unveiled its emotional new ad campaign, set to be one of the most expensive in the company's history. With Ford's next F-150 not due for a couple of years, will it hold on to its crown?

These are relatively crude vehicles to make and probably very profitable for their manufacturers. No wonder MB wanted in on the act!

10 best-selling cars (and trucks) of June

Here's the advert for what will probably soon be the best selling vehicle in the US. All goes to prove that altho we both speak the same language we don't necessarily think quite the same way in the UK . [ no disrespect- just stating facts]

Yea Chevy, Ford etc take notice. THIS is how you build pick-ups, Daimler 's been doing it for years. :):)

Mercedes have been supplying parts to Indian companies such as Tata and Bajaj for the local build of 4x4's and pick up trucks for years.
