Folks,
I was after some advice? My main key for my 1996 Sl320 was damaged by a hotel parking attendant and will not work. The hotel are willing to pay for this however, believe it or not Mercedes Benz UK have said they cannot source this key and that there is nothing they can do. This is quite devastating given that none of the UK key specialists I have tried can source this key! Does this mean I cannot use this classic anymore without my last key ?? I cannot believe Mercedes UK have washed their hands off this after Watford Mercedes sat on on my money for 3 months. Really awful customer service from Watford Mercedes and Mercedes Benz UK. Is there a way around this? Any advice will be gratefully received.
Regards

Mercedes Benz should be able to get you a key with the vin # from the car. I do it all the time with cars dating back to the 60's. If one dealer says that they can't, try another.

I have a letter from Mercedes Uk saying they cannot source this key anywhere in the world. This is after I complained to Mercedes Uk and got a call from their head office call centre in Holland! If Mercedes UK are saying they can then how will another dealer source this?

Keys are cut from blanks. The blank should be available as it's used by many cars.
Are you saying they don't have any blanks? If so I would call BS.
Are you saying they don't have the data on that car? Then request a new key with a barrel and have the dealer program it to the immobilizer. You'll probably need to get your door locks re-keyed also.

Post the letter, I'd be interested in seeing it.

Thanks for your response. I previously had a new key ordered 2 years ago - no problem! Now after sitting on my cash they have said this! I am not sure what else I can do. My non working fob needs replacing and every Indy I call says I have to go to Mercedes and they are saying they don't do this key anymore!

I presume it's a flip-style key - single, two or 3 button? That should help focus the search.

Are the electronics intact? The key case and blank are easy to get hold of.

Failing that, Carl at R129.co should be able to sort out a full lock set with keys.

So the key was my main key until a stupid valet parking attendant dropped and broke it! The electronics are fine. I have lost the spring however having re-synchronised the key fob after changing the batteries it seems that I can lock and unlock the car but cannot start it- guess due to the immobiliser. The hotel is willing to pay for the key and every cost associated but I cannot get a new one. I am not sure if the electronics are buggered or not but the car locks and unlocks? Does that make sense?

Did you open the whole key fob case? There is an transponder immobiliser chip inside the remote, located just below the Red LED lens as illustrated in above picture.

It interacts with a coil around the ignition key, if it is not present inside the key fob then the car won’t start.
Did this chip fall out of the remote fob when you were working on it and is no longer present inside the key, up below the Red lens. It can be glued back in place.

Example transponder chips below.

Just checked and looks like there is no chip/transponder hence why it seems the doors open and shut but can't start the car. Is this easy to program and buy? The 3rd picture shows all the bits I have! Any suggestions given that Mercedes won't assist?

I really appreciate all this advice[emoji108][emoji106]

These guys here… ReplacementMercedesKeys - Mercedes keys programmed and repaired! - Mercedes key - Contact Us … DO NOT supply a key for your car.
However, it might be worth giving them a call for advice as the do know it all.
Ask them if it’s possible to get a chip and then to have it programmed to your car, I doubt very much that this is possible but no harm in asking. Also, ask them if its possible to bypass the immobiliser, perhaps an alarm installer would be able to do this for you .

Otherwise, the only solution is to find the chip, at whatever location it was lost, unless it has been swept/vacuumed away by a cleaner.

Hope you get lucky.

Hi Dec, no chance of finding this transponder as it was 3 months ago and only now Mercedes have told me they can't supply the key. I am so annoyed about this and don't really know what else to do. Will a transponder from another salivate car work? One you can buy online via eBay?

Out of curiosity, I rang these guys here in Ireland… Mercedes Replacement Car Keys … the say the can supply a chip and program it to a 1996 R129 with a one button flip out key.
I think … Mercedes key specialists- Need new Mercedes keys? Replacementmercedeskeys.co.uk and Mercedes Replacement Car Keys is the same outfit so give the UK outfit a call.

The will need access to the car in order to program the chip, the may be able to come to you.
