I have a 1972 Mercedes sl350 r107 which runs well and ticks over nicely but has a strong petrol smell, particularly when first running. Just wondered if you guys could point me in the right direction. A couple of guys said could be injectors need replacing but runs really well so a bit stumped

Thanks for any help you can give

Regards

Simon

Simon...check all your rubber pipes as a guy in the official club had his go up in smoke due to a similar issue whereby the the pipes were perished and fuel spilt on the manifold and up it went.

Will do many thanks for that , just changed auto transmission pipes as perished so think that could be it
Will check tomorrow , any particular hoses
Cheers somon

I'd give the lot a thorough going over personally and consider changing anything that looks ancient even if the outside of the hose looks sound. Modern fuels are more chemically aggresive and as a result the specification for fuel hoses has changed several times since these cars were new... the higher permativity of the older spec hoses means that modern ethanol fuel blends can attack them from the inside out and ancient fabric overbraided stuff that looks OK can be a right mess inside. If/when buying new hose the spec to look for is SAE J30R9
A good opportunity to check for corrosion on the hardlines too and, assuming they haven't already been replaced with cunifer etc, give them a coat of waxoyl or similar

Cheers that's great thanks for posting this, bank holiday Monday will be hose check day, cheers again

Hi
Done a bit of investigation , hoses are ok and the smell of petrol is coming from exhaust so guess it is running rich. However it hicks over really nicely and drives well which I thought wouldn't happen if running rich. Is there anything I can adjust, I did adjust the idling sped previously which seems pretty spot on. Any ideas gratefully received, cheers simon

there is whole article in sept issue of gazette about early 350 sl/slc it has different set up and distributor has a second contact points and also possible injection ecu problem and resoldering, if u have a problem getting the issue pm me your email i will take pics of the article and email it to you, or if people like it i can post here, not sure if i am allowed publish articles from the official MB club being rival set up.

or call me 07958 216162

Hi
That would be fantastic. I've changed the Ecu from my donor vehicle and that seems ok but happy to check everything . I'll pm you my email and really appreciate your kind offer, I think would be really good to publish but I guess there are some guidelines on rivals
cheers Simon

Hi dinoy
I'll text you pm facility doesn't appear to work unless you have over 30 posts apparently
Thanks again
Cheers Simon

your donor is early model 1971/72/73 or younger as the system different apparently and older ones have totally different set up from 1974 and up FYI

D Jetronic has in my experience always run very rich. My Citroen SM used to pour out liquid exhaust on start up!

Hopefully Grober will be along soon to offer advice.

Hi dinoy
Donor car is a 1972 350sl as well. Was stored in a garage without a roof so every panel was shot but ECU works a treat which had packed up one car. Do you know if anyone reconditions ECU, I can solder but it looks pretty complex

sorry wife did not email me pics of the article to send to you certainly contact the guys in the club they might be able to help sounds like u need loads of electrical testers etc beyond me.

your distributor has a points system people change the top but there is another hidden at the bottom need replacing schmitt or vinod in dollis hill/staples corner might be able to check the point issue as for ECU less easy to answer read article n c

article emailled if anybody want copies pls pm
