Apologies if this is in the wrong place but put it down to my being a newbie. I was wondering if the Mercedes Star Diagnostic machine churned out anything more than the error code. My mechanics Snap-on diagnostic gives my car an error of p2029 which, after a search, could be one of many things (MAF etc). Does the Star machine give anything more than this to specify the problem? Help appreciated.

IIRC it give the specific MB decode, plus test steps and further diagnosis steps. It allows actuations and operation of various modules to test functions. Displays live data ..

STAR Diagnosis is much, much more than a code reader

Thank you for the prompt reply. I really appreciate it. I remember seeing an episode of Wheeler Dealers where an SLK was read and the techie had a laptop which gave a picture of where the problem was. I was really wondering if that was the are with all STAR machines.

Thank for this. Ill get reading. If anyone else knows how detailed a star goes from experience, feel free to let me know. Thank you once again.

Wouldn't put much faith in anything you see on wheeler dealers. From what I've seen when my guy put my car on star it can pretty much do anything you want .checks all values for engine sensors.activates any actuator you name it it can be checked on it. The list would go on and on .

Be aware, STAR is only as good as the person using it, so my recommendation would be to use a good indy preferably one recommended by the forum or even better one of the indys that sponsor the forum. If you put up where you are in the UK then someone can recommend someone local to you.

Thanks Andy. Good idea. I'm currently in Carlisle in Cumbria but going to Birmingham for the weekend. (South Bham near Moseley) so there would be good too. Many thanks.

Well I have the car booked into Autotech in Carlisle. I will let you know how I get on. I've not used them before and have heard mixed reports. It will be interesting to see what the report comes out with and how detailed it is.

I saw this message too late! I took the car to autotech in carlisle who diagnosed a spilt hose as the likely cause of the p2029a fault code. Will get that fixed this week but can't recommend Autotech in Carlisle enough at the moment. Especially since I am clueless about these things and they have taken the time out to explain all sorts to me!

Just a quick update for those interested and for the sake of the search. The car was suffering with an error code of 2029a. This turned out to be due to a split breather hose that Autotech Carlisle replaced this morning. EML gone. Car not so lumpy on idle. Anyone in the area with any merc diagnostic problems, I would recommend these guys all day long. Was cheaper than I had anticipated too! HTH

You can even make some cars dance using a Star.

I just love to watch my CL dance when serviced. Looks like it should be painted candy pink with a pimp at the wheel.
