Hi

Got a screw just within limits to get it repaired. The chap at the tyre fitters
said it was outside the limits as tyres are supposed to be the experts, I said ok.

The car was bought brand new and we hardly drive it as i left work soon after buying it new in April 2016 and car built about 7 weeks before
and tyres are from dated Dec 2015 = 265 45 20R 104Y - 2-5lts GLE

Previous Mot a few months back noted some "cracks in rear tyres." Car has covered 15k 100mls.
Only drive 1200 mls over 12 month service as been on hols for 6 weeks came back March Covid hardly out. Hardly used it since leaving work.
Bloke said tyres crack, as not driven often. Its a hairline crack I noted today between the treads and the tyres have a couple of k miles easily.

but I am going to change all 4.

My question - as the bloke said, do my SUV tyres have to have the letters MO and/or bee Mercedes fitment?

Ive seen and like Uniroyal and Avon tyres as I've have the Uniroyals on my C class and they were A! in wet weather.
Cheaper versions I like is the Falken FK510

The bloke got me slightly worried when he mentioned MO has to be on the tyres or insurance could be invalidated.

As the tyres I will be putting on are the same EG 265 45 24 104Y - can I fit the above or any other brand even if it not a specialist mercedes fitment?

Not all tyre sites allow you to just put car reg in for tyres and even those that do, not all tyres are MO whatever that means.

Hope I've been clear.
Thanks

The 265 45 20 104Y can i go for the higher load IE 108Y as 104 n/a.
Thanks

Tyres do not need to be MO.

Mb recommends that you use MO tyres, but it's not mandatory and will have no impact on your insurance policy whatsoever.

The official blurb is here:

MO tyres are tweaked to meet MB's particular requirements. They represent MB's preference regarding the balance between the various factors that make-up the tyre's characteristic behaviour. But it is not specific to the particular model of your car. I.e., a tyre is either MO, or it is not, but if it is, then it can be used on any MB car, from the A-Class to the S-Class. Whether it is worthwhile choosing MO tyres is a separate discussion that has been covered in various threads here, but the bottom line is that it MO tyres are not model-specific for your car and it is entirely up to you if you want to buy them or not.

You can use tyres with higher load rating (but not lower load rating). In theory, it means that the sidewall will be more rigid resulting in harsher ride, but in reality it will be hardly noticeable.

Tyres really are specified differently by car manufacturers, with alterations made to compounds, shoulder shape, position of reinforcement bands, and more.

The differences are pronounced when the same tyre in the same size but made to different manufacturer specifications are cut away and stood next to each other.

As suggested you don’t have to fit MO tyres, but you must make sure you don’t fit tyres with a lower load rating, although you can increase the load rating.

I use Audi tyres on our MLs because they last twice as long as the Mercedes equivalents, and I’ve not not noticed any detriment to ride, sound or comfort.

Unless you have firm preference for changing, I would suggest you stick with MO tyres in the same size from a premium tyre manufacturer.

Mercedes didn't do such a great job with the MO tyres specified on their 4matic vehicles. I often find that MO marked tyres are the older generation of tyre.

For the very low miles you travel, almost any tyre of the same size/load rate will do.
I also like uniroyal and tend to put them on all the cars I have had, although they are not considered to be a all season tyre, I find they have the best grip in the wet or dry.

'MO' tyres are exactly the same construction/compound as non-MO tyres, it's just that they meet a tighter QC spec for run-out, circularity etc..
There are also MO1 labelled tyres for AMG models...

Hi all
Many thanks to all of you and all v helpful.
I thought the bloke was BS-ing when he talked about the insurance and MO tyres.

I did not like the original tyres, Dunlop Sport Maxx 265 45 20 10Y as in the rain the felt as though slipping. I drive very slowly and carefully.
Looking at three tyres reading Tyrereviews on Avon zr7 I think, A1 in the rain but the wear was awful according to reviews, Dunlop worn out quickly as well.
Then Uniroyal Rainsport and had these on my previous Merc, a c class and it changed the ride to nice, sofe and stuck to the road.
Read reviews on the Rain Sports 3 & new 5 versions - Rainsport 5 got 97% in the rain but wore out quickly. Decided to go with
the 3 version. Having all 4 fitted monday, I hope. and hoping to get a softer ride and more reassuring one in the rain.

The hair line crack in the punctured tyre still baffles me as I use a RAC approve foot pump and then measure with an approved digital scale.
It is possibly true that due to lack of driving could be attributed to the crack, The rear tyres had fair amount of mileage left the front were wron slightly more but inner edges wearing so decided to change all four,

The TPMS, I was hoping to change the tyres and those next year but will see how it goes as they could last at least a couple more years.

I've been looking at tyre insurance and the org I am buying from do not do that. Motoreasy price is too high 124 for the year.

These inbreds that leave screws and nails in roads by being careless need a good slap as I pick up stuff like that if I see it in roads and car parks.

I will get the car tracked on a Hunter machine within two weeks and sooner if I plan to drive the car for more than 40 odd miles over that time.

btw, the Uniroyals have a slightly greater load index but that is ok, so new ones are 265 45 20R 108Y

Thank you.

One thing I look out for when buying a new tyre is a good rim protection bead - see this article.

It won’t save the alloy if you have a heavy impact with the kerb, but I find they certainly do stop minor scuffs and scrapes when parking.

Hi , my car is 6 years old and MO tyres are not available.

Spoke to Mercedes regards the problem and the very kindly sent me the MO list.

The tyres that are not available are still on the list.

Went back to Mercedes who said that's the list and don't waste our time anymore.

Phone went dead.

Hi Bobby Dazzler , my car came from the factory with Cont 5p

Size 235/35/19 F MO

Size 255/30/19 R MO

The tyres were filtted back end of 2018 and going to garage tomorrow to make sure they are safe to drive.

Mileage 5000.

I have spoken to Cont regarding availability of replacement tyres and at that date ( 15 months ago ) they had a couple of pairs available but I was in Portugal.

If these tyres have cracking in the sidewall will look at another brand .I do like the 5p !

Not sure I understand. I just did a quick search and there are MO options from the major brands, including the Continental 5P.

For example Camskill - the first online retailer I looked at - list both front and rear sizes, in MO fitment.

Front: Continental Tyres / Car / Continental ContiSportContact 5P Continental Conti Sport Contact 5P - 235/35 R19 91Y XL (MO) FR TL Fuel Eff.: E Wet Grip: A NoiseClass: 2 Noise: 72dB Car Tyres - MPV Tyres - People Carrier Tyres - 19" R19" - 235/35/19, 235/35R19 OE Mercedes

Rear: Continental Tyres / Car / Continental ContiSportContact 5P Continental Conti Sport Contact 5P - 255/30 R19 (91Y) XL (MO) FR TL Fuel Eff.: F Wet Grip: B NoiseClass: 2 Noise: 72dB Car Tyres - MPV Tyres - People Carrier Tyres - 19" R19" - 255/30/19, 255/30R19 OE Mercedes

I replaced a Michelin Alpin PA4 winter tyre due to a puncture. I found the same tyre used - non-MO.

It runs fine but I noticed the other day that the treads are different. Totally different.

Hi , have been to local suppliers regarding these tyres and reply generally is out of stock / short supply but we have these tyres.

Switch selling !

I don't think Cont have made these tyres for years.

The Continental website matches your tyre sizes to the 5P (in MO fitment) and 6 (with no mention of manufacturer homologation).

The big online tyre retailers all seem to list them too so it all points towards them still being available, could be wrong though.

Let me guess: independent tyre dealer recommending mid-range tyre brand instead, which just happens to match the great big banner on the wall?
