Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

I already have the linkage. We solved it about a month ago.

Thanks to Graeme's part number I have sourced the necessary gasket too. All I now need to do is work out how to preserve and replicate the lovely paint on the block cover shown again below.

Turns out the parts shipment from Germany has been delayed by a strike at DHL there. I suppose it's an early 70s car, so a bit of 70s strike nostalgia should be part of the process.

Don't think so Graeme, just good old-fashioned paint. Looking at it now, it is just red paint that has cracked a bit with age (giving it that lovely oil painting texture) on top of a matt black paint over the top of the zinc plated and passivated steel. The zinc plating has started to corrode on one segment, but no rust is through on the steel. I may just clean it off and lacquer it to stop any further oxidation of the zinc layer.

Sounds a plan if you wish to retain that 70's patina appearance . Just make sure you use a high temp one that won't yellow

What a good idea!

I wonder what type of potato MB used back in 1970...

I have had numerous lovely potatoes in Germany, all boiled/steamed though. Roasted (well, boiled and given a quick immersion in fat under the name of Bratkartoffeln) not so good, so much so that each time I am invited to my friend Victor in Nuremburg for the Bayreuth Wagner Festival I have brought my own of various types (Albert Bartlett Rooster giving the best results, Arran Victory not being available in August) with the necessary goose fat to cook proper crunchy roasties (Delia Smith method). Without my Aga the results are still good if lacking that extra crunch and fat absorption.

Victor has invited me to bring the car when done so I suppose Rooster it shall be!

What's the bet a new one would come fully printed there Charles...

Sadly - available but only with zinc plating and no red paint.

Well if you are serious about it try Steve Levine; very clever with the paint, did this on fibreglass just for a laugh.

Most MBs do that with steel for free.

Bellow has shown the way.

Be sure to post some pics it be good to see how it works out!

Lots of deliveries, popped up to car today as it is out waiting to go into body shop on Monday. Dan and Matt currently have three Jensen Interceptors in for work - all being restored and fitted with LS3 engines, one supercharged, by Jensen International.

Thanks to Simeon I shall spend Sunday under the car on a ramp at CCPS to get some more rustproofing done. Pop in and say hi if you are in the Weston on the Green area!

An entire day without distraction with the car on the ramp. The underside has had a good clean and inspection. This found that all the rear bushes will need doing, some missing fuel line clips and propshaft doughnuts too.

Cleared the front bulkhead of all the insulation which revealed all the rust there. Clearly someone has had a go at repairs many years ago, a putty like substance over wire - cleared all that out too.

Fortunately no other rust patches found! All the metal underneath (other than suspension arms) has now been cleaned and prepped for painting with POR15.

Oh, and I detailed the handbrake lines too. Bet Rashman hasn't done that...

Just back from dropping off the block and crankshaft at Knight Engine Services. Crankshaft perfect, just needs a light polish. The block has a small lip so will be honed and de-glazed, which won't eliminate it entirely, but will be oil tight with new rings (mine are the right size).

I liked Knights, engines stacked up everywhere, spotless machines and despite being in the middle of nowhere, as busy as anything. Being near Silverstone and all the motor specialists around, they seemed ideally placed. David Knight showed me a 250 block he had in in very poor condition, apart from the lip mine was in great shape.

A somewhat large valve

An immense piston!

From Sunday the view of the bulkhead from the engine bay. Someone had used chicken wire for repairs!

Big (literally hanging wardrobe size) box of parts arrived from MBclassics this morning - shell bearings, rear box, lots of different things.

I hope I am now at peak parts as space is now decidedly low. All the remaining body panels go off to the body shop tomorrow though.
