what a shame that isnt a 300.

Same vendor as the recent diesel coupe.

Excuse my ignorance please. What sort of mpg would that give, and how much is it likely to go for?

Reason I ask is I want a working hack. Was thinking about a Volvo V70 estate, can be had for next to nowt and go on forever. Might this be a better bet?

Thanks. Dom.

Helluva spec on a 250 - never seen one with so much kit.

Interested John?

40mpg on a run I think, 30 odd around town....stand to be corrected.

Its still carrying all the weight of a 124

W124 e250d

Not as dog slow as you might think. Just brought ours (auto 1993 estate) down from UK to France where it will live once registered over here (it's LHD) having spent considerable time this summer refurbing it and swapping the complete interior. It did just under 35 mpg cruising around a (GPS true) 136kph over 1400km. It doesn't leap away from a standing start like a turbo, but perfectly fast enough, and no trouble in heavy traffic. My daily drive is a W211 E220Cdi estate, and, whilst clearly a newer car with more bells and whistles I'm not sure it's any better built. The main thing for me is that, whilst I do all the straightforward services now on the family cars including the later electronic ones, I can do pretty much everything if I so wish on the older ones. I wouldn't be put off by the smaller engine. Whether a 250 or a 300 the main thing is a good'un well looked after with leather and plenty of extras.

I had a 190 D 2.5 which had the same engine and it was such a slug I couldn't get on with it. This must be even slower.

Maybe it's an age thing. I'm an old *******, and happy to arrive eventually, but having driven many bigger slower vehicles, and towed boats and tractors frequently (with Land Rover diesels or a 300GD G Wagen) it's remarkable how similar journey times are in all vehicles. The obsession a few people have with 0-60 times and such mantras is quite anoraky and not very relevant in the real world.

I haven't the slightest interest in 0-60 times.

I'm talking about being slow to the point where it is aggravating. It's such a chore to build up speed in one of these things. On the move it's tolerable, off the line it's IMHO borderline dangerous.

I have had a 250D Auto 124 Saloon. To keep up with traffic in town I used to keep it in second just to give me a chance of not being walloped up the chuff but some unsuspecting eurobox driver. Waiting for the right gap in traffic at a T junction if you were crossing both lanes was measured in minutes at times. Don't even show it an uphill slip road to a motorway to get up to a pace where joining at stream of traffic was safe.

As you say once up to speed it was OK.

Edit. My almost claim to fame.
Bought it off the drummer in "The Fourmost"

Neilrr and Trapperjohn. Sorry to hear you were both so unimpressed. Maybe it's a question of perception. Mine is a 20 valve, so maybe is a bit quicker. Perhaps a 300 GD and N/A Land Rover diesels teach you not to expect too much!!

I had a 250TD for twelve years. It was entirely liveable-with

You have to plan ahead when overtaking, forget all notions of drag racing anyone and pass using stealth & cunning

My average was around 33 mpg. I never found the fuel consumption to vary much. That might be because you have to pedal them quite hard to make them move

Someone might be able to drive slowly enough to get 40 mpg out of one but life's too short to find out!

It's a lot quicker. Day & night between your car & a 5 cylinder 2 valve 2.5 diesel.

Who can be ****d? The 190E 2.6 I swapped for the miserable 190 D 2.5 gets 30 mpg tank after tank with the tranny never ever using the 'E' mode & kickdown used all the time.

The car on ebay is known to have galactic mileage & because of a broken odometer an unknown number of more miles on it , zero service history & a couple of aging gizmos / toys. Don't see why people are getting damp gussets.
