guys i hope somebody can help us

a friend just acquired new old stock w129 panoramic sl hard top frame, he has also normal one from which side and back windows rubbers and other bits will come from that.

the problem lies with glass on the top any ideas everybody saying it is main dealer part which means it would cost a bomb

pls be clever does not have to be original if somebody can make or cut to size would be perfect

A windscreen manufacturer would probably be able to supply something, however as a custom part it will likely be just as expensive as via the main dealer.

i was told laminated glass from glass manufacturer and that would need polishing and edges scuffed could be as expensive as u say

Get a price from the dealer as a starting point .

I'd also try some of the windscreen specialists like Autoglass or Auto Windscreens - they may have one lying in stock and , as it will be a slow moving part , might just discount it a bit :dk:

I'd then try some of the specialist breakers ( Carl Burgess - W140spares ) or generally just people breaking R129's on eBay - there are a few and see if you can get a good used panoramic hardtop for less than the cost of the glass ?

Lastly , I've noticed that prices for used R129 parts , even when you factor carriage in , tend to be cheaper from eBay.de than sellers within these shores .

Another point - I've heard , but don't know first hand , that Panoramic hardtops aren't always a straightforward fit onto some cars - early ones in particular - and a bit of fettling might be needed .

thanks for pointers, will look in ebay.de but what shall i search for panoramic, the car is 1996 not early model

as for breaker they want so 1500 for one that is why bought brand u mb frame i have spare hard top to steal other bits all i need is the top glass

will check with mb about their prices too maybe they have defective scratched one in stock

Someone less scrupulous and honest than you might allege that a tile fell off your roof/a huge stone fell off a passing lorry/whatever and broke it , then claim it off their insurance !

There was a panoramic frame on ebay for ages, but I think unless you have the whole roof to start with, and want to replace the metal work, using existing glass and trim parts, you will be on a hiding to nothing. The glass will need to be tempered to cope with the twisting of the chassis, and I could easily imagine any after market attempt of manufacturing the panel resulting in a nasty bang with a substantial glass shower going round the first sharp bend at speed!

The only other DIY solution I could think of would be to get a large sheet of Perspex/acrylic and cut to size/bond in ?

been to glass outfit they said non curved glass shop laminated and the edges need shamfering to get round bends

so for no success to speak of, since in primer pointer need a willing screen place to replace it too and turn a blind eye.

that is the frame that was bought from ebay for 240 delivered we do have normal hard top to take all other glass and fittings, n we have not got quote for fitting either

u know what like old pontoneer red one how about unique canvas top?? he,he,he

will go to another screen repair shop

also glass on hard top n tile r cover?!

Given that the roof section is curved, and I don't think the windows from a tin top will fit anyway, I think you've got the comedy bit right! :p

It would be a shame if a rare part got ruined in the process, though.

We once had a new old stock top glass for a pano hard top. I think we sold it for £400 ish. £550 or so from MB dealer.
A1297901490 is the part number I think.

Unfortunately for you MD5 is on the money. The side and rear glass between the pano roof and standard hard top are not compatible or interchangeable.

Not only that but EVERY garnish moulding and trim is different between the tops.

You might have thought the frame was a good deal at £240, i'm here to tell you that it was not.

10 minutes research on the EPC would have told you not to go down this avenue. I'm pretty sure it's code 415 from memory you need to look out for. Look up the parts and then see the differing numbers between with 415 and without 415.

It might well be possible to fit a Webasto or similar sunroof into the hardtop - I'm sure I've seen Pagoda or R107 hardtops with retrofitted sunrooves .

Even putting a large glass sunroof from a random donor car into your metal hardtop might be a possibility - find a suitable donor car in a breakers and get the entire roof off it to transplant the sunroof and it just might work :dk:

we got quote from mercedes 400 + vat it is best but i am going to get diagram to see what else is missing and if can use the rest from the normal hard top he has and hope glass will not break when extracted it will not have linig etc

240 + 500 + 100 + say 260 for labour if lucky then cost will be around £1100

it might be not worth the effort considering finished one complete with curtain and trim is around 1300 - 1600 i guess
