Car
Mercedes Benz W140 S Class S280 1998
Hi so I went to go turn on my 1998 mercedes benz s280 w140 and it wouldnt start, there was no crank aswell, just silent, I tried a few time but still wouldn’t work. However all the dashboard lights, radio, reading lights etc all came on.
Also the car wouldn’t lock properly, some door lock mechanism would go down , some would stay up, meaning the were unlocked,so I have to lock it manually.
Is this a immobiliser problem or what?
Please can someone help I’m really desperate to find out what’s wrong
Thanks

The alarm/immobiliser on this era is a dealer fit piece of equipment
When my alarm failed the car would crank but not start (cuts power to fuel pump)

I think the EIS separate to the alarm checks that the key is coded to the car and if out of sync may produce a non crank scenario. If this is the case you can search on how to recode the key to the car.

However I would ensure that the main car battery is fully charged and in good condition and the key fob also has a new battery as this can also cause issues

Oh right ,but I thought immobiliser and alarm are both separate, might be wrong .
Also how would I code the key to the car again, is there a yt tutorial or something to help me, and what would the code be?

The immobiliser and alarm are separate but the alarm also has an immobiliser function.

Regarding recoding the key its a case of holding certain buttons and also ignition positions. I can't recall exactly, the search function/ Google will bring it up.

Start with the batteries though

Hi again, do you know exactly where the immobiliser is located in the car, I’ve seen pictures online of it being in the boot, near fusebox or behind instrument cluster, or behind glovebox? Please can you let me know
Thanks

I can't remember on the w140, sorry.

I take it you have ruled out batteries

o I currently haven’t, could you please tell me what to do again first?
Thanks

Make sure the car battery is fully charged or replaced with a new / known good one.

For the fob just replacing them is easiest unless you have a way to test

How would I replace, do I have to take it to mercedes main dealers, and how much would it be?

Hi
Do you know which is the correct battery for the mercedes w140 s class (S280 ) based in UK
Thanks

Google "car battery 019" , it will be around £60 for a budget battery and you can replace it yourself. However it may not be the problem. I suggest that you find a Mercedes specialist near you rather than replace parts at random.

I understand where your coming from, but in this case , I think it is most likely the battery because when I go to start car, all dash lights come on, and reading lights, and they start flickering , the key is 100% working that’s for sure, so I’m pretty certain it is, I don’t want to be spending lots of money on this, il be selling this soon to get a newer one

As per your other thread find a good specialist near who will be able to diagnose the fault
