Is there a secret to removing the Merc metal plug caps from the plugs?? Mine are very tight so I wondered if there was a tool or technique to getting them off to change the plugs. Thanks

If they are the same as on early smarts, there's a removal tool available via MB dealers.

Mercedes had a special set of pliers with semi cylindrical tips for the 102/103 engines with the metal plug caps. there are cheaper alternatives online.
here's the original one by HAZLET

Ok thanks so they are just a very tight fit needing a lever or hard pull action. A cut down opened up cranked 17mm ring spanner should work ok. I was thinking they may be fixed down somehow so didn't want to break anything.

Here’s another choice.

Buy a cheaper 17mm box wrench and cut the end as shown.

Will save many scraped knuckles and harsh words.

Yep that's what I was meaning. Not sure if my plugs have been changed but it's done 89k miles so I need to check their condition.

At 89K by the time you have got them out you may as well change them rather than 'check' them.

Find Scotty Kilmer on youtube I think he shows a long 'lever' type tool as well.

Hi,
If you are going to the hassle of removing them, replace them.
No Brainer in my opinion, especially if you don't know when they were last done (if ever).

I Need to find what plugs they are firstly. I have not had the car long hence why I don't know if anyone has already changed them. What's are the change intervals? I've Just changed the crank sensor and plan to do the rocker cover seals at some point as just weeping a bit.

Depending on model you may have a choice of copper, platinum or irridium tipped plugs. These are rated in that order-- lower to higher mileage/ price to purchase/ resistance to fouling. Are we talking M112 here with 12 plugs? NGK plugs have a good plug selector by model website.
