Michelin tyres to close in Dundee.
850 jobs lost. Apparently due to small size tyres being imported cheaper

its a specialist factory and demand for their product has dropped apparently. I guess smaller sizes and cheaper imports kind of go together. Always a great shame to see any jobs go.

It was nice to see on the Goodyear Eagles I buy "Made in Germany" now it says Poland. That's why Brexit isn't going to work.

When are Poland going to bring in a minimum wage to bring them in line with the rest of Europe instead of paying its employees 25% of what someone doing the same job in the UK or Germany earns, never mind France with its 35 hour week and Fantastic state final salary pensions?

Over the past 10 years, I bought 1 set of Continental tyres, and 3 sets of Dunlop tyres, that's 17 tyres in total (one of the Conti tyres has a nail near the sidewall less than a week after I bought it......), and they all had 'Made in Germany' stamped on them.

The last set was bought a month ago and the manufacture date puts it in Jan 2018.

So it seems that the issue isn't simply with cheap East-Eurpoean labour... possibly the product made in the Dundee factory wasn't right for the market, or there were other local issues involved.

Isn't Continental German? Dunlop made in Germany? There used to be some loyalty with national owned companies but even Mercedes which sourced everything in Germany is having parts made in China. Although that is probably part of the trade deal for their factory there. The problem with the UK is that none of our manufacturing is now nationally owned. That means if the bottom line is put at risk they will go. Ford has already said it is considering its position and Toyota has said the same. We might end up with Rolls Royce, Bentley and the Mini all being made abroad what a joke.

Dunlop is just a name of a company that went out of business many years ago.
The right to use the Dunlop name at that time was purchased by a few companies giving them the rights to the Dunlop name in their market. Dunlops in the US were made by a management buy out team, in Japan by Sumitomo etc. In fact the Dunlop name was even sold to sports equipment manfacturers for tennis balls etc. Over time the name has been traded between various companies but bears no relation to the original Dunlop company.

Judging by their dated trainers and Sports Direct , I'm not surprised .
Are you talking about Dunlop trainers? It's not the same company as the tyre manufacturer.... just like Rolls Royce the car manufacturer and Rolls Royce the jet engines maker are two separate companies.

Dunlop Tyres in Europe, US, Australia and New Zealand is actually owned by Goodyear.
