Just bought an 09 C220,sadly I've visited the dealers the SH mileage doesn't match other documentation, i'll list it below.

Service 1 10 2010- 10672m
Service 2 11 2011- 20472m
Service 3 11 2012- 32805m
Service 4 05 2014- 53472m

MOT's

09 2012 - 30827m
09 2013 - 40464m
09 2014 - 46676m
09 2015 - 50411m.

There's an issue between between 2014 / 15,could be a typo at service 4? also service skipped 2013??

I've purchased from a non merc dealer, looking for a way forward on this before I return to challenge the issue.

If the dealer was behind it, they've committed a criminal offence. If your happy with the car, go back and get some money off! If not get your money back and involve trading standards if necessary.

Car drives and looks well,1 owner also.

In terms of the trader, the previous owner isn't local to my area,
so suspect it may have been an auction buy?

How do I prove the trader is involved? or bought the car with the mileage unknown?

I would look at it his way:

10/2010 - 10672m - Service 1
11/2011 - 20472m - Service 2
09/2012 - 30827m - MOT
11/2012 - 32805m - Service 3
09/2013 - 40464m - MOT
-----------------------------
05/2014 - 53472m - Service 4 <---This entry is wrong
-----------------------------
09/2014 - 46676m - MOT
09/2015 - 50411m - MOT

I don't think the dealer is in on it.... because if the car was clocked, it would have happened before the 2014 MOT, i.e. long before the dealer took it into his forecourt.

I tend to believe that - as you suggested yourself - Service 4 is an erroneous entry - they probably got the mileage wrong.....

Is it just Service 4 that is inconsistent? If so, it may be a simple mixup.

Yeah I'm inclined to think service 4 should have been 43472m? trouble is its documented now and I've no way of knowing either way.

Probably gonna have a load of hassle when trying to sell in future.

As an aside Merc wouldn't give me any detail of this motor unless I went in with the logbook, bit sh+t really I could have avoided all this upfront.

Update....

Dealer is attempting to get the mileage corrected, via the independent garage who supposedly inputted it wrong? Is this possible to change within the online Mercedes service system??

Otherwise if it cant be done? they are gonna take car back and refund me,as the mileage was 'guaranteed' to themselves when they bought the car.

Sounds like the dealer is doing all the right things.

But do you actually want to hand back the car? If it's good, keep it....

If the mileage can't be amended? I'm prepared to negotiate on some ££££,otherwise they can take it back.

Mileage discrepancies are the bane of the motorist. Just because it is called the National Mileage Register, don't think for a second that it is run by an authority.

I had an issue with a car I bought. Even though there was a full service history detailing the mileage, for some reason an erroneous figure crept in, causing an alert. HPIcheck did agree to amend the figure once all the relevant documentation was submitted by Mercedes Benz, and they agreed that the one entry was incorrect.

The horror stories you can find on the internet shows that there are absolutely no checks whatsoever when entering a mileage for the register. One Skoda owner, who had bought his car at first registration, was shocked when he went to trade it in and found an erroneous entry, highlighted by dealer taking his vehicle as part exchange.

There should be checks for ALL entries in to the NMR. If something seems way out, it shouldn't be accepted blindly. In my report, the first entry read around 5,000 miles, then six months later it jumped to 53,000 miles, then back to 12,000 miles for the next service. Ironically, the date of the 53,000 entry did not correspond to the service date.

I have been told that it is easy for anyone to enter a mileage for any given vehicle, without validation checks. Whether this is true or not is unknown to me, but considering how an invalid mileage can affect the value of a vehicle, there should be more stringent checks involved when submitting mileages.

On my old W168 some twitchy-fingered plonker entered an extra 9 in MOT certificate a couple of years before I bought it, making it a half-a-million miles A-class ... now there's a thought :)

I contacted DVLA to point out that, it is unlikely the car had went from 43k one year to 499k miles the next and back to 52k the year after, but they said it's too late to correct, even though it was obviously a typo. Didn't affect the sale price when I sold it recently (with well over 107k on the clock).
