What sort of minimum prices are we looking at now for one of these?

Is the 280 worth looking at - kinda strikes me as being a bit under-engined but am happy to be persuaded otherwise.

:)

i had a 280 some 8 yrs ago.. decent car, and more than adequate, but once in a while you feel the strain!

if poss, stick to 320/350s and they had excellent balance of power to weight etc

TA crashed repaired vehicle will be very cheap, or one that has been 'customized' :)

What type of vehicle are you after?

A quick Autotrader search shows that they start at £22k. (2006 onwards....I think is when they began)

You might find a cat-c/d repaired one for cheaper though.

Are you after petrol - diesel - low/high mileage - what spec?

Maybe I could spend 10 minutes putting the standard wheels back on mine and pressing the button on the dash to restore the ride height to increase it's value:thumb:

As has been said, about £25k would put you in the 'pick of the bunch' 2006 320CDI with sensible miles on it. Then there's the options list......

Cheers fellows.

I shall continue to muse on the benefits of a £15k W220 vs a £25k W221 - weasels of either flavour look fave though I must say.

Not quite sure what you mean...I'm after an S Class and am wondering if I can run to the new model.
Folks are understanding my point :)

The problem with these types of vehicle is they need spoiling and acheap bargain will usually work out exceedingly expensive. The S-class is a popular executive private hire vehicle where they are possibly worked quite hard and time off the road is non profit time, but when sold the neglect might be reflected in the price asked.

A well maintained, serviced with no regard for costs might be a bit more expensive to buy but the running costs for you might be significantly cheaper. This might sound rude or even snobbish, but if you cannot afford to spoil these vehicles then you might not want to spend your hard earned money buying what you feel might be a bargain. I am a huge fan of the S-class and rumour has it that if they were to build an estate, I would be the first in the queue :)

I wish you luck but please be careful whern looking at the cheapest vehicles

W221 is a much better car, don't rule out ex limos, while it's true some are tired, you only have to look at Peter's car to see how well looked after they can be.

The 221 series start at around £25k for a 2006 one with sensible miles, from a main dealer, with 12 month approved used warranty. For a 2007 one you need about £30k upwards and for a 2008 example in good nick about £37k upwards. All these are 320cdi examples which are by far the most popular model in the UK (35 mpg combined and 0-62 in 7.5 seconds. What Car best saloon car in the world 3 years running).

I owned a 220 series and had the use of a 221 series for some while. I found much to like about both. Performance and economy are identical - near as makes no difference. Some prefer the looks of one; some prefer the other.

I didn't find any feature of the 221 series particularly better than the 220 to be honest and the controls (a bit like the i-drive in a BMW) in the 221 series are far less intuitive and easy to use than the buttons and switches in a 220. Once you know where they are, you get what you want from one touch instead of ploughing through the sequences of the computerised i-drive system. Linguatronic makes it easier. But I like simple buttons and switches. You can feel them without even looking. Matter of taste I guess.

The straight six engine in the 220 series is wonderful to drive. Real thump in the back when you put your toe down.

The new V6 engine in the 221 series is quieter (amazingly so at tickover) and coupled to the 7 speed box (which no diesel engine needs) gives smooth and effortless acceleration -but not the raw shove in the back of the straight 6 allied to the great 5 speed box. However, the 221 is very refined though. Matter of taste again, I guess, Drive both and see what you like. The 220's are great value at the moment.

IMO it is very important to get one with full MB service history as there have been loads of important updates and service campaigns on the 221 series (these are done free by MB dealers when servicing the cars but indies are not supplied with the free parts, or information and are not paid to do the updates. I'll post a thread from the US that gives all the updates there. Interesting to see just how many improvements are continually being made).

If you choose one without full MBSH be sure to drive it a good way at different speeds and in different conditions. Many of the early ones had problems with the 7 speed box giving rough changes -sometimes- and at some speeds- especially when slowing down. Problems were cured by updates if the owner went in for a main dealer service and noted the problems.

I agree with comment made above, I would also not consider buying one from anyone other than a main dealer and get the 12 months parts and labour warranty. I bought a W220 39k miles one owner S320 from a main dealer and had replaced under warranty Comand unit, front callipers, two cats and a new sump when the main bearing fan belt pully broke down. I, so far have had no problems since that first year but am I glad it was a dealer supplied car.
