At long last managed to get all 4 injectors out using the screw-in puller, which entailed dismantling the injector tops before removing. I think the rocker cover's OK, but the problem I've got is that I have lost two of the tiny steel balls from inside the injectors.

I'm going to need to get some new ones, if they are available separately.

Question is, does anyone know where I can get them from?

I'm working on a 52 plate W638 Vito 108 2.2CDI.

Ask your local bosch service or diesel repair garage. They are sold separately.

Thanks - I'll give that a go.

OK - local Bosch service garage referred me to a diesel injection specialist, who said that they could supply the balls, but that by losing them I had effectively scrapped the injectors and that they and the cups that they sit in would have to be replaced and the whole injector refurbed and set up. They also said that for the two injectors where I had not lost the balls, because I had opened the injectors and done them up again they would also need refurbed at a cost of £125 per injector.
Real or not?

I would say BS. They just want do the job. Of course it is possible to ruin something when opening injectors, dirt may go in, you may scratch something etc. but it is pretty straightforward job anyway. If they were stuck, puller may cause some damage too.

See here catalogue, nice exploded views
http://www.darwendiesels.com/uploads/files/COMMON RAIL PARTS CATALOGUE(1).pdf Of course parts should be ordered via injector part number to ensure right type of spares.

I have disassembled injectors many times without problems (tough it was a prototype engine I was dealing with). Parts are so cheap that I would give it a try anyway.
