Came across this story on the BBC this weekend - as the headline says, the maths behind John McGuinness and his incredible record at the IOM TT.

Lots of data about accelerating for longer, braking and leaning harder than other riders, but what caught my attention is his very low heart rate leading up to and during races.

Well worth a few minutes on the following site, exploring some very nicely presented data.

MATH BEHIND THE MORECAMBE MISSILE

Stuff like this is interesting. They did a similar thing a few years back with F1 drivers, specifically M Schumacher.

The difference between the top guys seems to be mental capacity and the ability to process information faster or more efficiently than the next guy. Natural ability is such that the physical mechanics of riding, gear change, track position, grip levels, proximity to competitors etc etc becomes almost automatic. This frees up mental capacity to use elsewhere, such as tactics and trying alternative lines.

Yes, and the BBC article (which presumably draws on the research) suggested that the lower heart rate enabled him to concentrate harder and as importantly, be less tired as the race progressed.

Some guy.

It is quiet simple the man is a lunatic, mad people have no fear.
