Missing Service Book

Have just bought an ML320 but realised too late that the car didn't have a service book with it. Have spoken to Mercedes Uk and have had some success in finding car's history but as yet have not found a dealer who has serviced it yet. The car was originally sold in Jan 2000 and at present is showing 39,000 miles. The service indicator is reading negative -22400 so I guess it's either never been serviced or not by a proper dealer. My main question is roughly how often do they need servicing? I know it depends on how it's been driven but does it need servicng annually or do you always go by the service indicator?

On the modern MB's you should go by the service indicator. Yours is obviously not been following the indicator, and it now needs servicing and resetting.

At 39000 I would have thought that it should have had about two services and due a third!! It was last reset at 16600 which sounds a bit high for a first service on a petrol engine, so it might have been done late and never since. Which is worrying from a history point of view.
