HI ALL
Im thinking its time to change the family car . We did consider a Xtype jag but found it to be small and we got some bad feed back from here and on another fourm .
I reckon that our choise is gonna be between an ML 270 or the E 200 ( 211) What kind of MPG should we get from the ML ? I have been told to expect around 25 , is this correct , it seams very low . With our current car (210 E 200 K ) where getting 28-29 MPG , and i would expect the same from a 211 E 200k , is this right ?
The driving the car will be doing is on mostly A and B roads with some city driving .
Cheers Steve

ML is heavy and bulky. The weight will get you on stop/start driving, and the aerodynamic drag will hit the fuel consumption when cruising at higher speeds.

E class is lighter & sleeker, but obviously not an SUV!

Depends how important the high driving position and 4WD are to you.

Hello

My farther inlaw owns a 2000 ML 270cdi and he gets just over 30mpg on a run, he does little 'short' runs most at least 20miles say. Round town its probably 25mpg.

I doubt a E200 is that good even though lower, lighter etc as its a small engine for a resonably sized car.

Try both see what feels right, we like the high up seating, the space in the boot, feels very secure and safe, pulls our van easily.

Remember the ML was facelifted around 2001 (indicators in mirrors = newer model) and they are 'meant' to be the one to go for.

Also what millage do you do a year? as the ML320's will be much cheaper and lower miles generally.

For the current versions:

E200 urban fuel consumption is 24.1, combined is 34.4.

ML280 CDI is 23.3 on urban, 30.1 combined.

Thanks for the info lads . Id not be interested in the 320 , the road tax on that would be €1500 . Id only just pay the €1100 on the 2.7 .

You really need to move somewhere cheaper or vote out your government!!!

My ML270 would do 35mpg on a run and around 25 mpg around town all day long.

Even had it up to 41mpg once.

Keep it below 2500 revs on the motorway ( 70mph ) and only use BP Ultimate or Shell V Power diesel.

I did 75k miles in it over 5 and a half years so got to know it quite well and how to drive it to get the most out of it.

Cheap supermarket diesel was not good for economy.
