Hi all. I may be able to buy a 2004 (54) ML270CDI for a reasonable price
Apparently it was running well and one day it cut out at traffic lights. It was recovered and had the crankshaft sensor?? replaced and then it ran well again.
Suddenly the engine cut out again and it's been parked up since. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated please 🙏
Thanks

Two most commong things are problem in fuel delivery (low pressure) or crank shaft sensor. You have no way of knowing without fault codes.

Thanks for that, it's had a new crank sensor so that helps. Do you know how easy or otherwise it is to replace the fuel pump please?
Thanks again

In fact its rarely pump itself. Its OM612 engine, there culprits are leaks in low pressure lines (no - it won't leak fuel out but draws air in) either connector o-rings or just brittle lines., injector inner leak (can be measured mechanically), or troubles in tank balancing system (if saddle type tank).

As per your question hp pump replacement is rather easy, I just don't know if W163 fan shroud need to be removed or tilted.

One more thing came up my mind; some engine models shut down if one injector electic connection is disturbed.

Do not play parts darts, pull the codes.

Thanks again for your help. I'll have to get it over to a Mercedes specialist who's 20 miles away in order to hook it up to a STAR software. Bit concerned that it'll fail before arriving though. Will any decent code reader pull out the relevant codes? Thanks 😊

Define "decent code reader"

Standard OBD readers will read the OBD standard code list.

Some codes are manufacturer specific and need additional software to read ie Star.

Autel, iCarsoft etc make scanners that can interrogate and read some manufacturer codes from the ECU and other electronic units. It might be worth buying one if you intend to run an older vehicle.

The OM612 5 cylinder engine was also used in the T1N Sprinter van (216/316/416 cdi models). This US based YT channel has plenty of content which may be relevant to ML 270cdi OM612 running issues.
