Hi, MY 2002 ML is pre-wired for a single electrics towbar, can i wire the loom directly to a trailer socket myself or is there good reason to use the optional MB wiring kit?

I don't know, but.... Have you got a cost for the MB kit? Is it unecessarily expensive (some parts seem to be some are very reasonable)?

If the price is OK ,the question is why NOT use the MB kit?

The kit is £90 which seems a bit expensive to me for a bit of wire and a socket.

You would be able to wire up a cheaper system but you have to be aware of the delicate and complicated nature of modern auto electrics which includes bulb failure warning systems. By going for the cheaper method there is a risk of you blowing a circuit in the car's electrics which could prove very expensive to rectify.

You have two choices;
1 Buy and fit the MB setup = dead easy and no risks.
2 Try Towsure or other towbar supplier and get a universal setup that will require a reasonable amount of autoelectrical knowledge and still have some risk involved.

My advice is, unless you are really confident with modern auto electrics is to get the MB setup. Good luck.

Thanks for replies.......i will probably go for the MB bits.
