ML Dash Board Gone Crazy!

Hi all,

On my 2003 ML the following lights have illuminated on the dash. They are as follows:

BAS/ ESP
ETS
ABS
EPC

I have read the manual and it says for the BAS/ ESP the on board voltage is less than 10 volts.

ETS to prevent the brakes overheating.

ABS due to a voltage below 10 volts.

EPC due to a malfunction in the diesel-engine electronics.

Or they could have all failed.

I did travel 200 miles north yesterday and back, however no lights were on the dash.

I am wondering if water has frozen on some of the electronics or could the battery have nearly had it?

Also I am thinking of waiting for the temperature to rise in case it could be the frozen water.

Will the faults have to corrected via star diagnostics or will they sort themselves out if it is frozen water?

could be alternator belt slipping!
thats what happend to my w202!

Really? All those lights would appear due to the alternator belt slipping? What causes the belt to slip?

Could it be that my battery is going dead?

Exciter ring or brake switch. Though if it was the exciter ring you would eventually go into limp mode and your cruise will not work and parameter steering ( if fitted ) will not work. Check the brake switch first.

Hi Lynall, where would I find this?
Also are you suggesting that this could be the cause for all the lights?

The car was fine until this morning?

I would say that all of those coming on indicated a voltage issue.. I would also be looking at the belt/alternator/battery.

OK cheers Jay, I will check the car to see if they are still there today.

The lights have all vanished!! Must have been the cold weather.

lol good job you didnt take it to a gargae then!
i wouls still think it might be a belt slip due to cold!

Hi C230Kompressor,

Nope I didn't take it to a garage. I hope the belt is not slipping especially around xmas and new year.

Hopefully I don't see those lights again.

Cheers for the advice, if the lights do illuminate again I will take the car to the garage.

this weather will do odd things... my wifes CLK 270 would not start this morning... been fine up until the cold snap.

The lights are back!!!

I have also noticed the wing mirrors no longer fold.

Got back in the car the other lights were on except the EPC. Then the wing mirrors closed and opened. Started 2 drive, I heard a shredding noise and the wheels felt odd; it felt like a power failure was going to happen.

I stopped and then started again, after turning onto the next road the noise and feeling came again. Although this time the Yellow Warning Triangle illuminated in the dash.

Also the EPC light is back on.

I have read my manual and it says with regards to the Yellow Warning Triangle:

4-ETS/ ESP is activated becuase one of the drive wheels has reached its tyre grip limit.

ESP is deactivated. There is an increased risk of accident.

Any ideas what is wrong with the car? Could it be the alternator/ belt? Where is this located on the ML?

Could I have a faulty MAF sensor as I noticed the revs were not going over 2500 when I was driving normally?
