HI, anyone know the biggest tyres that will fit the ML 163, 20 inch rims and still maintain same Ish diameter

Currently got 265 45 20's as standard.

Thanks

Do you mean W163 or W164? Your avatar shows a W164

We have 295/40 20 winter tyres and 295/35 21 summer tyres on our W164, and both are the correct sizes specified by Mercedes.

It's July 2010 and yes it's my car, 300 CDI Sport. Was told 163 but no idea.

Yours is a W164, so 295/40 20 is the size recommended by Mercedes for the ML63 AMG when fitted to 20 inch wheels.

W164 (with 20 inch wheels):

W164 (with 21 inch wheels):

W163 (with 17 inch wheels):

Unless your wheels are 9.5" wide, 295/40 tyres won't fit. A picture would help.

You have a lovely collection of M-Classes, Bobby. I don't know what I like better, the AMG or the oldie ;)

Standard wheels, 265/45x20 are specced, but if your fitting a complete new set I found that 275/45x20 were a fair bit cheaper! And the size change will make virtually no difference to the running or the car.

Example being Contis Sport Contact 5 from Mytyres 265 @ £276 each.......275 @ £230 each.......

Your best bet is to call your local MB dealer and ask them to quote you on the smallest set of wheels suitable for your model.

My 420 came with 19" AMG wheels as standard so I would think you can go down 1" but whether you can fit 18s, let alone 17s, is something your dealer can look up in EPC and answer.

I think he means what are the widest tyre he can fit on the standard rims

Hi, its because the 275 45 r20's are cheaper etc, and you can get more of a 4x4 tread instead of the rubber band look.

Cherrs for your help

275.45.20 will be fine mate.

Also, look for tyres that are low db and high comfort rating, this can make a hell of a difference to ride quality.

Depends what you want from a tyre?

They are great off road, but quite noisy.

These are comfy and quiet, well as comfy as a 20" can be....

Dunlop Tyres / SUV 4x4 / Dunlop QuattroMaxx SP Dunlop Quattro Maxx - 275/45 R20 110Y XL MFS TL Fuel Eff.: C Wet Grip: B NoiseClass: 1 Noise: 69dB SUV Tyres - 4x4 Tyres - All Terrain Tyres - Off Road Tyres - 20" R20" - 275/45/20, 275/45R20

This is the Grabber at £118..

General Tyres / SUV 4x4 / General Grabber UHP - 275/45 R20 110V XL FR TL Fuel Eff.: E Wet Grip: C NoiseClass: 2 Noise: 73dB SUV Tyres - 4x4 Tyres - All Terrain Tyres - Off Road Tyres - 20" R20" - 275/45/20, 275/45R20

73db is quite loud plus noise class 2 means there is more 'drumming' as the treads are more blocky.

The Grabber AT is even louder..

I have a 2002 ML270cdi on 17's and my old man has a 2010 ML350cdi on 20's, I love his car but couldn't live with the 20's, it just ruins it and makes the whole thing feel like it is not as well built, just the way it crashes over the slightest pothole or raised ironwork.

Crashes over the slightest pothole !!!! I thought I was off road.

Its because you are running on 20" wheels, when I was buying mine I tried several out, and the ones with a 19"wheel and more rubber do give a softer ride.
But being the dim wit I am I went for one with a set of 21"wheels because they look great.

Just fitted General Grabber AT 275/45 r20's. Have to say that the noise is not noticeable but the ride seems more comfortable. Early days but happy so far
