No, they're not powered to automicatically lift. The noise you heared was probably just the electonic lock being disengaged as you held the handle.

The new ML (W164) comes with a power boot option.
This can be controlled remotely (driver's door switch and/or key fob) and from boot lock and the door swings fully open (not fast, so you can get out of way
).
I really like it cos you can open boot before you get to car and 'bung' bits and pieces straight into back etc. w/out having to put them on the ground first (while you open boot).
