The ML has been into my indy today to have a look at the EML/CEL, transpires it was relating to the adblue heater. Whilst it was there, my Mrs mentioned to him there seemed to be quite a loud 'whurring' noise coming from the drivers side wheel area. After completing the software update relating to the adblue heater, although he didn't have time (apologised) to have an in depth look into the noise, he agreed it was noisey and this is where the air compressor is housed (for some reason I thought it was in the boot on the ML) and it is a sign it is on its way out.

The car does not sink at any time and prior to it going back to have it diagnosed properly and check for leaks does this sound about right, ie compressors getting louder as they are on their way out. It seems to run when the car is off for longer than it used to aswell, which I thought was indicative of a leak.

It would appear the compressor is made by AMK? But would an alternative suffice? Any recommendations for a replacement unit?

Try Aerosus - give them your VIN and they'll check which is the right pump for your car - their online chat service is spot on.

This might be the one though: Mercedes-Benz ML Class W166 Air Suspension Compressor - A1663200104 | Aerosus

I bought a brand new AMK pump from them which is OEM for my W164 ML63, and identical to that fitted by the dealer, and I think that was £229 including VAT, plus delivery. Arrived next day. Excellent service.

PS It cost £80 to fit.

Thank you for your recommendation, that indeed is the one, £300 incl delivery. However, I will be contacting the indy again today to confirm it is the AC, as according to various websites the AC unit is in the boot and NOT in the front wheel arch where the noise seems to be coming from!

Can you not rebuild the compressor Abb?

Can you not rebuild the compressor Abb?

I believe so, just waiting to have it booked in again and have a compression test carried out to make sure it is the compressor and not a leak somewhere!

How difficult are the compressors to remove and refit? As in could this be done at home with proper tools etc or is it best left to the specialists because coding is/maybe required??
