It's a sunny day & after 9 months ownership of the ML (W163) during which time I've replaced the thermostat, cleaned the EGR & done the EGR mod, replaced damaged EGR hose & replaced the MAF, I've finally found the source of the Whooshing!

The short piece of rubber hose connecting the intercooler to the curved plastic boost pipe (RH side of rad's) was not fully 'home' over the pipe ridge (by 19mm) on the intercooler outlet tube.
Looks like it'd been fitted incorrectly since new. The hose only had one partial mark on it from the hose clip.

Anyway, now I know how to remove the headlights & the main brace across top/front of rad's!
All done in 3 hours, together with judicious cleaning of upto 10 years of turbo crap around n/s headlamp & a/c canister etc.

Test run gave me massive increase in power & kickdown from low speed - without the dreaded WHOOSH.
Thanks to all who may have unknowingly contributed to my fault finding and giving me the courage to strip the front end away for access.

So to confirm its the part where the boost pipe ( that's connected to egr) connects to inter cooler?

Picture please?

Thanks for that Jane.
What would you say is the best way to get to that part?

+1^^^^^

Thanks Jane270ML.

How did you know to look there?

After reading forum posts on possible 'turbo whoosh leakage', visually checked pipes/hoses/clips from turbo to EGR.
Working above & underneath the engine with cleaning cloths, torch & mirror. Even removed/replaced the easily accessible hoses to inspect for splits. There aren't that many to do.
I was a bit reluctant to remove any hoses attached to intercooler in case they had coolant in them, not knowing how a turbo engine worked - this is my first MB, black, diesel, 4x4, turbo -so very wary & did a lot more research on t'net.

After looking at the 'mbilcats' parts list drawings, decided there must be a hose joining intercooler to the curved plastic pipe.

Bonnet up - removed lower headlamp trims - remove headlamps - remove steel brace across front of car, very careful with sensor & alarm wires & bonnet-catch cable - peeled back RH rubber shroud to find offending pipe & clip.

Removed engine covers - released EGR pipe 'C' clip, eased hose clip & removed EGR pipe - removed sensor from curved plastic boost pipe & hose clip, then 2 bolts holding this pipe to intercooler bracket - removed another hose clip & offending tube.

Big clean-up then reverse procedure for rebuild.

Reason for being extra careful with regard to removing hoses was because the 'mbilcats' parts list quotes the hoses as being 'cooling water pipes'. They aren't!

Hope this enlightens you.

Hi Jane270ML,

Thank you for taking the time to write up the above.

I will have a look and see.
