Hi guys just picked up a 2002 ML270 the other day its got 79k fsh.

It seemed to be fine when I got it drove home 200 miles from manchester to Luton parked it up for 2 days.

Then I went for a drive yesterday to get the geometery done and after about 20 miles the gearbox started slipping from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th at around 2500 revs plus it only does it when warmed up and not cold. I've taken it to a specialist today and he said I'm looking around £1000 to £1500.

I dont have that kind of money as I spent all my money on the ML when I bought it. Can anyone please give advise and also is there anyone on the forum I can take the car to who know's about these gearbox issues I dont mind traveling.

Regards Mal.

Firstly who did you buy the car from? Was is private or from a dealer/garage?

Secondly check the easy things e.g the gearbox oil level, is may be low and can cause the issues you mention.

Hi I bought the car private. I called him today and all I got was (I'm sorry it was fine when I had it) I've got it booked in at another specialist wednesday I just hope he's not like the guy I met today who never even mentioned oil just rebuild or repair.

Hi guys had the gearbox serviced today it seems quite alot better. Still slipping under hard acceleration only at 3000 revs. The guy never emptied the torque converter just the gearbox. How much old fluid would have been left in the t-c? he also mentioned that the oil was really black and in bad condition.

Thanks BlackC55 well atleast the box does'nt seem knackered. I'll just use this oil to flush the rest of the crap out and get it serviced again. When can you book me in for a fluid change I'm guessing I wont need a new filter or will I? I can come down tomorrow Wed, Thurs

Regards Mal.
