Generally on UK spec. cars you can't change the digital speed readout yourself. This is because the main speedo only shows mph, and there's a requirement to be able to display kph.

It may be possible to alter it using STAR (the dealer diagnostic package) though.

ok thanks for the reply

The answer is to contact Command UK in Lightwater and get UK mode coded out (or find a coder who can do this for you). You can then select temperature or second speedo. Had this done on my 2008 SLK.

Obviously you need to be pretty sure you're never going to drive it on the continent, as being able to see the speed in kph is pretty handy then!

To be precise: :D

Most MB instrument clusters have the option to display the speed in km/h using the LCD display.

The issue with that is (and hence the need for a separate UK layout), is that once you do that, you can't use the other LCD functions - e.g., if you wanted to see the navigation instructions or the audio playlist on the instrument cluster LCD display, you'd have to switch from the km/h display.

The UK layout adds permanent km/h display (replacing the external temperature display), which allows you to switch between the various LCD display functions while still being able to watch your speed in km/h.

As a side note, if driving often on the Continent , you'll find that it's actually quite easy to convert in your head between mph and km/h, once you get used it....

thanks for the help would i need to take the car in or do they give you details on how to do it ?

£200 to change it and car needs to go down stay in scotland so a bit far lol

In theory the coding could be done with anyone with access to Xentry or similar. Maybe worth an online search for a coder nearer to you?

For background, the reason Mercedes do this for UK cars is that they have overinterpreted the Type Approval Rules which say EU cars must be able to display mph and kph. They took this to mean at the same time (always) and not user change when required. When you do change the display then depending on the MY it might change the speedo to km (reads upto 160 and then the display in the middle takes over after 160kph). My first two ML (06 and 07MY) did this but a later 07MY didn't.

As a bonus, when you change to kph it should then make the cruise control/spped limiter metric aswell.

managed to find someone with the star computer .. but they have never changed kph to mph anyone know what to change when its loaded ?

What is it that you’re trying to do, replace the digital km/h speed display with a mph speed display, or something else? I’ve read of people wanting to replace km/h with outside temperature but not replace it with mph which is how I interpreted your initial post. Good luck with the change,

change the digital km to mph
