Well Guys,

I was on here a few months ago after some advise on buying a CLS however due to various issues I diddnt end up buying the one. I had the chance to purchase an Audi A8 Which was a great car but my word was it boring for me... so its sold now and im back in the market for either a CLS320 facelift model or a ML420 CDI

I have seen the one below for sale but I feel the person is asking too much in terms of price ..... wondering what you guys would be willing to spend on the below and if anyone has had any experience of one? Reliability issues, mpg?

... apparently its just been services and there was a problem with a part in the gearbox relay? that costs 2k ??? ouch!!! but seems to have been very well looked after and fully loaded. tell me what price, whats it worth then I will tell you what it is being sold for :P

HELP ME GET INTO MERC OWNERSHIP LOL

What makes you think it's over priced?

Is it far more expensive than similar mileage vehicles ?

Well for the millage and spec I do feel its over priced. for example I seen one 3 days ago - 2008 model CLS320 CDI, FMBSH 50k, amg pack and the spec went on and on, massage, cooled, heated seats, rear entertainment, one owner, rear heated seats, fridge, it was gorgeous and it was priced at 17.5k - its sold :(

Sorry, I was on about the ML.

Ah! haha - Well I have been looking at the market for a while and I have seen similar cars cheaper, but not so much cheaper maybe 1-2k but it makes all the difference, for example. I seen an ML420 cdi very very similar to the one in my post in terms of spec, colour, amg pack but it was an 08 plate with 36k miles for 20k.

That ML that you've posted pictures of is very, very high spec. It looks like its got the factory fitted rear entertainment, AMG kit and so on.

If you're a bit of a optional extra freak like me, I can see why you're interested in that ML, I suppose it all boils down to how good you're at negotiating...;)

Hi SPX,

Yeah you are not wrong, it terms of Spec the Car is very well loaded, its ideally what I would want, there is nothing else where would sit there and think, I wish it had extra, except for maybe digital TV :p hehe.

The person wants 21k for it, I feel its a tad high. for me a really good price would be 19k.

The trouble is if I come to sell it in 1-2 years time I don't want to hit my self in the danglies hard in terms of depn - I understand everyone takes this hit but its about reducing it; minimizing it as much as possible.

How many miles a week/year will you be doing?

If its around the 10k mark, I wouldn't worry too much about residuals.

With regards your decision between the ML or the CLS, have you driven the V8 or the V6 diesel yet? If so, which did you like?

Don't think MPG will be that great on either, since you want the specs you might have to give a bit on price, depreciation impact will be less, depending on how long you want to keep it. Are you willing to buy a lesser spec vehicle for a more competitive price? :)

I wont be doing any significant millage - I will be doing 10k per year.

I have driven Merc V6 Derv a few times and think its a great engine - had a bmw 3l and my last audi a8 was the 3l but felt like something different too and everyone raves about the 420 engine -

Have to say though, the CLS looks gorgeous, driven one a few times and do like it, had a Range rover v8 previous to the audi and do miss the 4x4 feel (high up) etc - only reason both are holding me back is price.

id be happy with either one tbh

does anyone know what "INFO RED RADAR WARNING SYSTEM" is ?

either it's a missile warning system or (most likely) a speed camera/radar gun detection/ warning device.

You know those laser pens that the army use to guide missiles into buildings etc?

Well it's not one of them, if that's what you were thinking...:D

lol would be very cool if it was a missle warning system however can you imagine your face if it started to sound while in the car if it was LOL

It will be an Inforad K1 speed camera gps device. They are very good for £ 30 !

I'd find a very high spec 320 cdi ml instead - thy just make far more sense. I tested both and got the 320. Real world just as quick and much better economy.

My old 320 might still be floating about - it had everything the 420 you show had bar the AMG kit. They tend to get highly specced the ml's.

There's about 100 HP and 200 Nm of torque difference between the two.
320 is more common but there's no comparison between the two.
Out of curiosity, what fuel consumption were you getting?

I have to say this is the first time I have heard there is not much comparison between the two - everywhere I have read and been told is that the difference is huge in terms of power and torque and makes a huge difference to the experience.

I have generally noticed the ML420 CDI's are specced a bit better and tend to hold their value better too.

V6 has 224bhp with 376lbs/ft torque.

V8 has 306bhp and 516lbs/ft torque.

In real world driving, the ML420 will struggle to top 25mpg.
Both ML engines from my memory fall into the £460 road tax band.
This will make future resale difficult in my opinion.
