Hi Y'all,
Well, I've stayed at home, like they said and haven't moved the car for a week (parked on my driveway)
Came to use it today (essential food trip to tescos) only to find my n/s/f caliper is seized leading to burning brakes smell noticed on arrival at tescos carpark and same smell and red hot wheel nuts, brake disc etc by the time I got home. Called local indy garage who have dealt with the car since I bought it last November only to find that they are closed until allowed to open at some point in the future (Covid-19).
I successfully overhauled a caliper on a mitsubishi delica about 10 years ago so have an idea of how to get on with it BUT tech has moved on a bit and need some advice.
Firstly, what impact does the tyre pressure monitoring tech have on removing wheel and working on the brakes - never had any or worked on a car with it before.
Any idea if kits are available to overhaul calipers for (W164) ML500 ? - and if so, where to get them from at the moment.
Can anyone point me in the direction of instructions for the process please ?

Cheers,

Be well, stay safe,

Dave.

Well the tyre pressure monitoring is not a problem because it is the valves that send the signal so you can remove the wheel no problem, I uspect you will need new disc's but I would sort the caliper out first, and change the brake fluid,it does not like being boiled, then give it a run and hope your disc is ok.

Bigg Red Bigg Red do both reconditioned calipers and repair kits. No idea if they're still doing mail order, I'm afraid.

It might just be the sliding part - for which (with the exception of bolts/pins) there won't be much in the way of repair kit. Look first. And look very carefully for signs of the grease in the wheel bearing having melted and run.

Took advice from my local indie garage who responded to an email ( bless 'em)
Took apart, freed up pots, cleaned up pads and calipers. Put back together and seems fine.
Short drive, wheel stayed on and brakes stopped the vehicle so looking promising. Just got to do a longer run tomorrow to check out whether it's still binding and generating heat.

....and here we are 6 months later still running free and fine, didn't have to buy anything in the end, just cleaned up shim, cleaned and greased sliding bolt and all good. Thanks for the pointers 😉👌
