I really cannot see why not. I've owned A's, B's, C's, E's, two ML's and an S class and every one of them has delivered the combined figure on a reasonable run, cruising at the legal max. My current ML gives just over the 32 mpg combined figure on a run with little effort on my part.

All the cars I have owned have also had reviews in the press achieving the combined figure on a run driven 'sensibly' and numerous threads from other owners getting at least the combined figure on a run.

My E220cdi estate had a claimed combined figure of 38.6 mpg and I regularly got into the forties on a run. My S320cdi had a claimed combined figure of 35 and that yielded 37 mpg on a trip to the South of France and back. And more on some other trips in the UK. Other owners reported getting far more.

The newer engines seem to report wildly high mpg figures relative to their predecessors and actually return less economy in the real world than their older equivalents. Almost 40mpg from an ML, not a chance...
